If at anytime You have Trouble or Can't get my Method to work, Please see wesgarner's [Root] SimpleRoot v1.3 (Linux/Windows)
Link > [Root] SimpleRoot v1.3 (Linux/Windows) - xda-developers
Just use my Update.zip if you just want root only

Download This Package > Root.zip

Quote:

when you're ready to run recovery in the bootloader be sure to unplug the USB from your phone until 'HBOOT' not 'HBOOT USB PLUG' displays.

So basically you unplug the phone until 'HBOOT' appears, have 'RECOVERY' highlighted, and plug the phone in a moment before you select 'RECOVERY'.

The moment I did that I had 'recovery' displaying in my loop.

Continue with the directions...
How-TO Root the Slide

First!! - Go to Settings > Application > Development and turn on USB Debugging. This should save you headaches.

NOW… Power Off the Slide

Step 0.
Un-zip the Package you Downloaded

Step 1.
Place the Contents of "update.zip" & "ota.zip" & "loop" into your Android SDK Tools folder.

Step 2.
Open Command Prompt or Terminal and CD to the SDK/Tools Directory.

Step 3.
Power on the Slide into the bootloader by Holding Down ( Volume Down + Power Button )

Step 4.
Now run your loop file from the prompt (either type "loop" in windows or "./loop.sh" in a *nix like) ( ./ Is used For OSX )

Step 5.
Once your loop is running in your prompt, select Recovery from the bootloader menu.

Step 6.
When recovery loads, you should Have an Offline Device. You can use ctrl+c to stop your script & see.
If this doesn't happen, Power Off and try again..

Step 7.
Un-plug your USB cable from the back of your phone & Plug it back in for it to Detect ADB Correctly!!! This is an important step. At this point you can adb devices to see if you can see your device and that it is in recovery mode.

Step 8.
Hit Volume Up + Power button to Bring up the Selectable Menu
Select Update.zip from the menu. (This will fail, but we already know that! Select it anyway).

Step 9.
adb push ota.zip /sdcard/update.zip (*OSX users add a ./ in front of all terminal commands please.)

Step 11.
This is Very important!! Have this Command ready in your prompt before applying update.zip again!!

Quote:
This is the Command, We do not Push this Yet adb push update.zip /sdcard
step 12.
Hit run update.zip, as soon as you see a Little Bar appear under the text, push Enter to execute the command in your prompt (adb push update.zip /sdcard )

Step 13.
In successful, you should see Clockwork Recovery & you Now have Su & Superuser.apk Installed! You can Now Reboot Your Phone into the OS to verify.
If unsuccessful, repeat steps 11 & 12.

Congrats.

I root and get everything, the Clockwork Recovery screen, but everytime I reboot the phone and if I go into Recovery, it defaults back to the standard Android Recovery. Any ideas? Is the root not holding? I also noticed when I tried to remove stock apps now that I am rooted, and I delete the apk and cache file for like Visual Voicemail, it comes back after a reboot. Is that because the root isn't holding?

A. Once Rooted Flash the ENG build

B. You can not Reflash the Recovery

C. ClockworkMod Recovery is a Fake Flash and must be saved as update.zip

D. You can only Remove App from Recovery, once you mount the system in CWM Recovery

E. You Must Do All the Above, To Do all above!

I am not as savvy on the Android, as I just moved here from Windows Mobile where I unlocked phones and dealt with custom ROM's. So, isn't it 2 different steps, in that you can root your phone and leave the same factory OS (mine is T-Mobile), and then there is loading a custom ROM which requires rooting the phone first?

I guess I just don't fully understand your instructions. I have searched several forums but can't find the answer to what I thought my first question was, which I guess may have been the problem in that my question is wrong.

So can you please elaborate on your instructions?

You can Root the Phone yes! You can leave the Factory Rom on and still have root..

Now, if you want to do custom Rom's, Follow the Instruction on Flashing the eng-build first!! This will be needed to install custom rom's with ease!

Default Dumb Question re Rooting

Alright...this is a question I have some thoughts on myself but:

What do you consider to be the top benefits of rooting the MyTouch Slide?

I'm thinking hard about it but frankly the phone works well for me as is...except I'm beginning to get "Low on space" warnings I don't appreciate.

I'm also wondering what the benefits are of rooting. As I never even knew what it meant.

All I know is I want a LED light for my camcorder.

Rooting is good for lots of reasons, and in your case would be good for apps2sd, and removing bloatware. Plus it gives you the freedom to try out custom roms, like one of the froyo roms, since we probably won't get a legit taste of that for some time on this phone.

The HTC slide and Mytouch Slide are the same phone.

Using the above method, you only gain root access and maintain your stock ROM.

Rooting is not for dummies so no walkthrough...DO NOT TRY TO ROOT WHEN YOU DON'T TRUELY KNOW WHAT IT MEANS AND WHAT IT DOES.

This is obviously well above your skill set and knowledge base if you don't even know what sdk is. Do more research. Rooting is not for casual users that don't even know the programs and tools to use or the terms used! Plus this method doesn't work with the new update anyway.

ok...ok. what i recommend you do is go here first to learn about android sdk:

http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

now go here to learn how to root the slide with any software version including the new update:

[How-To] Root the Slide with any sw verision and flash cust rom - xda-developers

on the xda forum read the entire thread linked above (or at least most of it) as it will likely answer questions you have. Also take a look at some of the other threads in the development section at XDA pertaining to root, but the link i provided is the most up to date.

aight. totally figures that the ONE day it's TOTALLY dead at work and I'm finally inspired to root my slide, XDA has been down for HOURS!!! =L

ADB recognizes my phone fine, I get all the way to step 7 but can't get it to acknowledge that the phone is in recovery (just continues to say that the device is offline even after I plug the cable back in). And yeah, ADB IS working properly... it recognizes the device whilst it's powered on.

I'm assuming this has something to do that it's running the 1.35.531.1 firmware and that I need to see the "root the slide w/ any software" thread but I can't because XDA is down =L anyone have another link to the newer methods hosted by someone other than XDA they can share with me? I've been searching for about an hour now and am about to lose my sanity ha ha.

@AndroidAutobot

Here you go:
How To: Root the HTC MyTouch Slide (Exploid Method) | TheUnlockr

PS I hate the unlockr because info is usually wrong or outdated, but they just reposted this method from the boys at XDA so its all good.

So far the Tom is awesome but there's no swype. Is it like that for all froyo Roms?
And I thought that froyo comes with camcorder led but so far only a torch app? I also tried blackslide.

Noob question:
Why does it always show an "H" icon now instead of 3G?

H=HSDPA or 3G+ (slower than HSPA+ but faster than 3G)
3G=HSUPA or standard 3G

these are both part of the HSPA family of data transfer. many custom roms utilize this as do most HTC firmwares, including the HD2, but for some reason is not used in the stock espresso rom. also when in HSPA+ (tmo's new high speed network) areas you shold see a H since the slide does not use HSPA+ but can utilize some of it's faster speeds.

3G = up to 5.76 Mbit/s
H = up to 7.2 and 14.0 Mbit/s
HSPA+ = up to 56 Mbit/s (tmo's is currently a theoretical 21 Mbit/s)

if your phone has the latest software from tmo, which it likely does, this root process won't work period! use the link in post #24 to root the slide with any software version.

I tried that method but I can't get bootloader to update ESMPG.zip file.
When it loads files it says, cant load image or something like that for last two files.

that is the most current software version for the slide so, like i stated above, the root process in this thread will not work.

Well I already figured that out after ur first post. My problem was caused by wrong SD card format.

For future rooters: make sure ur sd card is formated to fat32
