android manages opened applications which are running in the background, so officialy you shouldn't care about that. which means that it closes the applications when the system needs more memory. however, most android users are not very satisfied with how it does its things because sometimes it leaves too many processes running whih causes slugishness in everyday performance. that's why it is recomended to use some kind of task manager, so you can take control of the whole pocedure. there are a lot of useful apps for that in android market, just search for "task manager" and you'll see that you have some free alternatives. i use advanced task killer and it does it's job very well.
as i know, the pulse has 192 mb of RAM, which equals with g1's specifications. if no apps which require many RAM are running in the background, you usually have about 30 mb of free RAM available.
after factory reset you get about 60 megabytes of free space to install apps on your device. if you run out of storage space, the system notifies you by placing an icon on the notification bar. this usually happens when there are only 15 megabytes left.
