That issue can sometimes occur when the battery has been too fully discharged prior to recharging. A few things to restore the lock button functionality include a simple reboot (shut the phone off, then wait a minute, then turn it back on), a live battery pull (with the phone on, remove the battery, wait a minute then replace it) and a factory data reset (menu > privacy > factory data reset).
I think you'll have it resolved before having to do the reset.
