I have a Sidekick 4g oviously.. and no data. I use wifi in my house to get on the internet. If I leave my house, and close all my apps.. Are they running in the background and using up internet? If so.. How to I close all of my apps for good? Don't want a huge surprise phone bill and i'm new with smartphones

All of that should be under Settings. Also, Quick Settings ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bwx.bequick ) is a great way to easily access all needed settings in a hurry.

Either way, you can turn wifi & data on & off among many other options.
