Default TMO - Recent slow download speeds, high pings, and Speedtests pinging to servers in midwest?

Hey guys,

Friend and I are both on T-Mobile. We used to consistently get at least 4-6mbps in our apartment building in SF on Speedtest's results. Loading webpages and the occasional vid was never a problem. But it seems like things have worsened recently. Last night while we were watching TV, we noticed that our download speeds were sometimes going as low as 500kbps. The more interesting part was the way our phones were pinging from servers in Kansas (me) and CO (him). We used to ping directly from SF servers months ago. I'm on an LG G2x and he's on a G2, both which are HSPA+ 21mbps phones.

Any chance someone could shed light on what's going on?

Could just be a temporary problem. Why don't you dial 611 and ask T-Mobile?

It could be a problem with speedtest, or your app.

Time of day?

They are doing a -lot- of work on their network.
I have seen what you describe here and it's usually temporary.
They are taking some sites down to do upgrades and that puts more load on other sites reducing speeds.

I would give it a few days to see if it goes back to normal.
All you might get for an answer is what I just told you.

Keeps pinging back to Kansas with pings ranging from 90ms-800ms. Speeds and pings vary. Time of day doesn't seem to matter all that much though the last time I got 500kbps, that was at about 9pm.I got 3.7mbps and 1mbps in two separate tests, both pinging to Kansas. I'd like to be able to ping to a server close than the one from Southern Kansas Telephone in Wichita, Kansas, so I hope this isn't permanent!

That's a Speedtest server issue. Obviously the further the server is away from you, the larger the pings. Especially if there are issues somewhere in the middle between you and their server. I doubt this has anything to do with your service.

If you're that concerned, call your mobile carrier.
