I only pay sales tax. When I add money to my T-Mobile account or buy a prepaid card, I am charged sales tax. When T-Mobile deducts the money from my account for the monthly charge, the do not add any taxes or fees but charge $30.

You may also be able to get out of paying sales tax by finding an online store that sells prepaid cards. I believe some here use Callingmart and there may be other websites.

I asked them the other day over their support Live Chat thing about the actual price of the $60 pre-paid plan. The rep I got said it is $60 even for the service, no hidden fees or anything.

Actually a pretty decent deal. I'm buying a Nexus 4 when they launch and was considering taking it to Simple Mobile for $50 a month, but $60 is only $10 more and that way I don't have to worry about any of the shady MNVO antics.

This is great news. I assumed even T-Mo's prepaid plans were subject to all of the ridiculous fees for "services" that providers love to tack on. If it's just sales tax, that's awesome.

Purchase the virtual $30 cards from CallingMart.com and save on the taxes as well as 3% off using code: ca3p-1207. I just did this on 10/28/12 and it worked perfectly.

A store rep I talked to yesterday said the only fee you pay is the 911 fee, otherwise it's just sales tax. The $50 plan works out to about $58 where I live with the tax and fee.

Wow, 16% in taxes and fees? I would get the $50 card from CallingMart.

I've never been charged the 911 fee, at least as a separate charge. The only tax I'm charged is if I buy a refill card locally or add money to my account directly through T-Mobile then I'm charged sales tax. When T-Mobile debits my account to pay my monthly fee, they take out exactly $30, the cost of my monthly plan.

Store reps are notoriously sketchy in their knowledge, so good to hear. It's possible the 911 fee is only for BYOD plans on contract, as opposed to the monthly no-contract plans.

The local shops around me all charge the 911 fee, it's mandatory for our state, but it is only 1.5% so like $.75. Upside is no sales tax, the total including the 911 is $50.75 (I'm on the $50 unlimited prepaid plan).

none of the fees and taxes are put on by the carriers. They are all government required. Pre-paid still has them, they are just factored into the cost of the plan to simplify it.
