A used phone might be a good place to start. It surely wouldnt be the most current device out there, but kids tend to break phones very easily

I don't have att, so unfortunately I can't make recommendations for them. I just thought I'd chime in and try to help

Just off the top of my head
HTC Status, Motorola Backflip, Sony Ericsson Xperia x10a (Use to own and is very cool) HTC aria (Small but could be great for someone with tiny hands), Sharp FX (Slide out keyboard for easy texting) Samsung Captivate, had this one for a while and its a tough phone. they use the Gorilla glass and it is tough.

Hope that helps.

An original Motorola Atrix is another possibility. I've seen refurbished ones advertised on Ebay for as little as $180.

Also, the Samsung Galaxy S2 is still a decent phone that you can find around for reasonable prices.
