Changed from a blackberry tour, I was getting upset at the lack of updates for blackberry and found that the OS updates that did come only added more UI and slowed the dam thing down and created more crashes. Not to mention the joke of a web-browser it has.

At first I was shocked by the Evo, getting used to the touch screen especially typing was a challenge. I am still up in the air on which I prefer but I feel that I can and will always be able to text faster on the blackberry. One disappointment with the Evo is not having it send texts when you hit return, I mean who is going to go to the next line on a text message. This is especially annoying in landscape mode as you have to hide the keyboard in order to send a message.

I want more options to customize and more menu choices everywhere on my Evo, my blackberry had so many more options. For example, "DELETE ALL PRIOR MESSAGES", and more ability to customize device behavior when it comes to UI. (example different lock screen and background screen, since fixed now that I rooted the phone.)

For google maps if I want to send directions its a pain in the ass, same with if someone texts me an address, sometimes it doesn't blue underline the entire thing. Maybe someone can help me out but I cant figure out how to copy and paste anything from a text message. That would help out by allowing me to just copy it and put it in google maps. Also I would like the iphone interface for google maps which again quickly allow you to send directions to other people.

Another gripe is the browser, I wish at the top it had a home shortcut or a way to easily go to the home page. Maybe someone can give me a tip or a trick.

Another flaw I have found is, when using an app that looks up a business ect, and you hit call it from the app, the phone will not work since the 3g is connected, so you always have to redial the number to get it to work. Something needs to be fixed to either cut the 3g when you make a call ect.

The battery is what shocked me the most, its true it sucks. My tour I would unplug at 8am and it would last me till 2am -3am easily. Never used a car charger or had to do a battery swap. The Evo lasts until 10pm at best, with the same usage, no WiFi find no use for it. Granted you read all these topics from Evo Fan boys who have stock evos lasting a day, I laugh you must not be using the phone at all, just like the folks who could get multiple day usage on the tour.

(I send about 1,500-2k texts a month, prob spend a total of 30 minutes a day using various applications, maybe an hour a day on the phone, about 20 emails sent a day. )

I was about to return my Evo this week due to the battery, having it die on me at the end of the day is what just about made me go back to my berry.

BUTTT WAIT. I ended up rooting the phone yesterday, did the overclock app trick, set the clock for "screen off" at half of the 1ghz. Dramatic battery improvement without performance decrease when on. My phones been on for 5 1/2 hours and has only drained down to 87%, yes you read that right, at this point my phone would be well below 40%. (And no I do not use an app killer at all)

In conclusion the phone needs to be rooted and get rid of all the crappy sprint bloatware, and the cpu clock is a must to gain battery. It should of come rooted from the start, I see googles original concept of an open phone OS going down the trash quickly, and I sense quick updates to new OS are in the past since carriers seem to now control this new OS. Unlike Apple and the iphone I feel that ATT has no choice but to accept what apple says and I feel google doesnt have this power but needs to gain it.

I cant figure out how to copy and past: you have to hold down where you want to copy and a small window pops up

One thing though about google OS is that its actually gaining ground, its going no where, and open is a big thing now not closed like the other guy, also about the home in the browser thing, if you want to be able to use a short cut download the dolphin browser, it has a home shortcut up top.

dieseldum, if you've got the time, dive in! It's as simple as reading an instruction manual, just follow the steps. Nothing really to be THAT scared of.

Go to the rooting section here.. Its easy as cake and they have step by step picture directions. All in all took about half an hour total for me (thats including the download times, and installing times)

    http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-evo-4g/99793-tutorial-idiot-proof-root-guide.html

This is about as easy as it gets. You could just use the unrevoked root to be able to do the battery trick he was talking about with the CPU clock thing.

I have not run into this problem at all. I've done it (while on 3g) at least a half a dozen times on the evo. I did all the time on my instinct too so its certainly not an issue. Based on all your other issues, I'm gonna have to go with user error on this one.

How is it user error to use google maps to search for a business, then click on it, then hit call. And it takes you to the phone app which places the call and all you have a call in progress with no ringing. ( my blackberry would do this also but if you waited 5-10 second it would begin to ring, the EVO doesnt). I have 1 time gotten the message "3G" in use can not complete call.

Because i've done it and seen others do it numerous times. You couldn't even figure out copy/paste. Not to mention that most of your "gripes" are very minor to begin with. You're pissed because it doesn't send texts when you hit return?? Do you need someone to do it for you?

edit: furthermore..."I see googles original concept of an open phone OS going down the trash quickly." Are you kidding me?? You wouldn't be able to root the damn thing so easily to begin with if it wasn't so open.

Ok evo fan boy, cant admit the minor errors of the phone and attribute it to user error.

First I know how to copy and paste, your statement is false. As of now you can not copy and past from a text message, without hitting forward message then at that time you can copy and paste.

Minor grips they may be, but they add up and shouldnt be there in the first place, these minor issues are what separate a good phone from a great one.

The text issue is annoying and not well thought out. You have to hide the keyboard in landscape mode to send a message, that makes sense.

And at no time did I say I was pissed. I said these are minor issues that shouldn't even need to be addressed.

The fact that I have to spend 20-30 minutes to root my phone shows carriers are trying to lock them down.

Go sit in your corner and praise your phone as the best. But just because you have never had the issue doesnt mean it doesnt exist. I had it happen to me 3 times yesterday (BTW while in a car), maybe it was the phone, or maybe it was the network, but your statement its user error when all I did was hit "Call number" and get an error since 3G is in use by google maps. You really need to think before you type crap like that..

Here is a theory, maybe just maybe google maps while on the move it is constantly getting 3G data and GPS signal to keep up with your moving position and having a fresh new part of the map come up. When you click on a business to call, the 3G is still in use... And sometimes it doesnt get cut off once transferred to the phone menu. As we all know 3G data and Phone cant happen a the same time... So I get an error. This explains for me why I never get this error when sitting at home, and so far have only had it on the move.

And crappy battery is not a minor gripe...

Go sit in your corner, and be a fan boy on sprintusers, and unless you have something helpful to say dont post at all. We are all here to learn, and I along with "numerous" users dont appreciate it when someone comes along and calls someone stupid and provides nothing but personal attacks to a topic.

If you want the ability to copy and paste from a text, just use handcent. It lets you copy on a long press. It also lets you use enter to send the message, just have to go to settings to enable that (default is alt + enter).

Sent from my kickass EVO using tapatalk.

Never attacked you personally. Only pointed out that your gripes are ticky-tacky. Most are minor to say the least. Yet now you agree they're minor however in your original post you said you were ready to switch back to the blackberry. I'm certainly no fan boy--I have plenty of my own issues with the phone, including battery, light leakage, touch response, and issues with using wired headsets with microphones. If I were a fanboy, I'd tell you to shove the phone up your ass because its gods gift to nerds. I won't go that far.

EDIT: ok...insuating you were whining about texting or too stupid to do it may have been slightly personal.

I was going to return it over battery issues.. Now ive fixed it via root.. But battery issues are a big issue since most users dont know how to root, or wont root and modify a stock phone.

if you have the newest version of google maps sending an address is easy. bring the address up on google maps. touch the on the location point on the map. click share this place. then choose messaging. done. it will send as a link that will automatically launch in google maps when the recipient clicks on it.

I assume you have already tried unchecking 'received notification' (show notification in status bar...) under messages>menu>settings. Not really sure if that will do what you want though.

Every now and than I wish I had a pet monkey so every time I read a post like this I ca try to strangle it. First off copy and paste is easier than idiotic blackberry u do not even have to to into a menu just press on a word and hold your finger there than the copy options will show up. Next texting is not hard because it even has speech recognition. Return botton is an inconvenience but with blackberry u had to go into the dumb menu to send the message or email. Next is battery life - it is not uncommon a phone with 1ghz processor to have battery issues. when you combine all of the features hat the evo offers it is nearly impossible the battery to last more than a few hours.

I switched from the blackberry 9700 and I cannot be happier because I don't have to deal with RIM's crappy phones and their crappy software.
