2.1... Confirmed!!

As a person who has worked in software development for 20+ years, I will simply say that certain people will hold to a release date until after it is missed... some will hold to 3/26 until 3/27 then wonder what happened. Others will be honest as soon as it is obvious that the target date won't be achieved.

There are cases when serious compromises are made to reach a date, and if Sprint does that, I won't be rushing to download anything.

This is irritating and one of the reasons I picked an Android phone. An apparently mistaken reason.

It just underscores my feeling that carriers should be just that: carriers, phone companies. Not rewriters of OSes.

Sprint has been notoriously late with updates on phones I've owned in the past - Palm and WinMob. This wait with "leaked teases" or "misinformation" is nothing new.

I'd hoped that Android (as the OS) would end up being pushed out by Google or someone else without all the necessary rebranding.

I know that Sprint (and other telcos) need to get it to work right with their system. That shouldn't be a huge time suck, though. However, when you throw in branding crap like NASCAR and SprintNav, it just adds more time.

Plus, they're not in the business of writing OSes. They're in the business of providing phone service. And that's what they should do.

(Sorry. A minor, on-going naggy rant I have about not just Sprint, but the other companies that promise too much and deliver too little.)

check out the new posting titled "MMS messaging issue leads to hope for upgrade..." This guy has an audio clip attached that was a voicemail the srpint rep left on his phone after he got dissconeected with them while talking about the MMS download issue. In the voice mail she confirms a update on march 26 im not sure if its for 2.1 or just to fix the MMS issue but it definetly gets me excited! i mean even just a mms issue fix would be nice!:p

I agree. I'd rather wait a few weeks more for an excellent product than get one that has had certain aspects yanked due to issues and an drop-dead date. I didn't work in software dev., but I worked in Marketing... The Marketing dept. will sell, sell, sell, and then blame the developers for not producing at deadline. But, in reality, the deadline was never realistic. It is an ongoing battle in every company between marketing and developers.

Anyway, I will believe the release date the day after it is actually released. ;)

20:21:53 : Milton G: Yes, you are absolutely correct.

20:22:13 : Adam Sawyer: Thanks Milton, have a great night.

I just called my salesman, a bright young rep who knew his Hero pretty good already (he owned one too) when he sold me mine the last weekend in October (he also sold my wife one two months ago). I'm not going to give his name out because I don't want to divulge my source, but for the record I live in Arlington, TX, and my Sprint store is also a repair center.

I asked him this afternoon if there was any substance to the March 26 rumor. Here's the conversation (btw, I've called him a couple of times since buying our phones, so he knows who I am):

Me: Hi [Sales Guy], this is [Joe Schlabotnik]...You sold me and my wife our Heroes.

Sales Guy: Oh yeah, how you doin'?

Me: Hey, I've been reading in the forums about a March 26 release date for 2.1...can you tell me if there's any substance to that? Will 2.1 be coming out this Friday?

Sales Guy: Yeah, you'll have to bring the phone in and we can load it in for ya.

Me: So it's not an OTA thing?

Sales Guy: Well, we want to make sure the complete Push gets done right.

Me: Okay, would I need to make an appointment for that?

Sales Guy: Well, we could probably fit you in if you just stopped on by.

Me: So anytime Friday or later would be okay?

Sales Guy: Yeah.

Me: Okay, thank you sir, have a great day!

Sales Guy: Okay, thanks.

I haven't said anything about any of this yet to my wife, but I think my current plan is to take her phone in and get it updated first, then let her thrash it real good (with my help) for a week or so before I decide whether to upgrade mine or just wait and root it after the 2.1 ROMs come out.

It will be out when it comes out. Sometime between ten seconds ago and the end of June. Until it's out, there's no sense in going on and on about when it's going to be released...so please stop with the pointless threads about how 2.1 is coming, and you know a date because some moron at Sprint tech support told you so.
Jeez, dude...if it gives you such a case of heartburn for folks to post up about what they've heard about 2.1, then don't read it, okay? Nobody's forcing you to read these threads. But do the rest of us a favor and don't go spreading your whiney gloom about "pointless threads about how 2.1 is coming". For my own part, I'm excited about the long-awaited pending release of 2.1, and I'm believing my Sprint rep is on the level about the Friday release date. If I'm wrong, then hey, the joke's on me, and I'll buy you a beer just to let you know I can take a joke. But if I and others on this forum are right, come Friday, then you owe us all a big, fat whiney apology, alright?

Alright.

Alright.

All I'm saying is it's a waste of time and space to keep on with these speculation threads. We all know it's coming, and we all know there will be more information available from an official source soon enough. I just find it incredibly stupid to jump on a sprint tech support chat and ask about the update, because they don't have a clue. More often than not, we've got more information (whether it's good info or not) than they do, which is why there's so many different dates jumping around. The last official word was that they will be rolling it out within the coming weeks. Expect more information within the next couple of weeks, from the sprint forums and sprint's twitter. Until then, there's no point in annoying the hell out of sprint tech support about the update, and then wondering why it takes so damn long to get to someone with tech support when you really do have a problem you need them to take care of.
