Guys just letting you know, incase you dont visit the rooted subforum. One of the developers at xda forums did get his hands on the leaked version of the sprint 2.1 update. He says its working perfectly on his phone. Just letting you guys know in case you want to come to the dark side. The software he has uploaded isnt there yet. There are a few bugs, so I would wait, but I doubt it will take more than 3 days or a week at most to get the bugs out.

What that means to you is you could have a fully functioning 2.1 update this week (if you root) or you can wait and hopefully sprint will release it soon.

Well if you really want it but are also worried you will mess it up. Best thing to do is read read read.... Look at the rooting guides. When I rooted mine I had no clue what the commands I was entering in did. But I just stayed confident and just kept copying and pasting things into the command prompt until I had a rooted phone.

What makes it even harder to root is the couple of guys who have recently posted that they have bricked their phones even after they did a lot of reading.

Are you sure they posted saying they bricked their phone rooting? Pretty sure you are talking about the radio updates that people did. I never did since there was a report or two of bricking. That has nothing to do with root or 2.1

No one knows. It should, but you know how that goes.

Checked out the thread and what I am seeing amounts to 80 pages of problems.

To be fair, many of the posts are just reiterating earlier ones. However, there does seem to be way too many problems, including a few biggies - no Sprint network, no Android protected apps, 100% battery use.

Gotta laugh at some of the fanboys over there. Typical comment: bestest, greatest ROM, works perfectly except for a,b,c, and d. Oh, and e.

Bottom line is, if you actually need your phone for work or important stuff, give this one a pass.

Ditto. I'm just being patient and waiting until Sprint actually releases it so that I won't have to keep updating to get rid of bug after bug. I'll just stick with Fresh 1.1 for now since it runs like a champ with GK and setCPU.

Yep, all kinds of stuff not working on that build and several people have bricked their phones trying to root. I'll pass.

Not total brick, but several posters have reported losing the ability to update from Sprint after installing this built and not getting it back even after reverting to stock.

There have been reports of bricking phones rooting and loading rom's, not sure if they are accurate, but they are there.

the bricking I've read about had to do with ppl loading the wrong Rom's like gsm versions. wrong radios etc. like a poster has said before, the ease and simplicity of our phones is amazing when rooting and loading custom Roms. just remember one thing, only load cdma sprint hero files and your golden

I'm sticking w/ Fresh 1.1 for now too. I'm curious, when Sprint releases 2.1 are you planning on using RUU to unroot and just go back to factory settings and then upgrading? I'm assuming you can't install the official update if rooted...

You absolutely do NOT want to install the official update to a rooted phone with a custom ROM. Once the update is released, within no time, there will be multiple offerings based on the official build, trimmed and optimized, that will be as stable, functional and as fast or faster than the current crop of 1.5 ROMs. Ironing out bugs is part of the process, and if you think Sprint's release will be 100% bug free, remember back to the that Hero Sprint released last October and think again. It took them almost 2 months to drop a maintenance release that fixed the SMS bug that was keeping the phone at 100% awake and running down batteries in a few hours, or display the right time in the HTC clock & weather widget.

If you opt to go back to stock and install the official Sprint version, it's quite possible (some say likely) that root access will be sealed shut, at least until some clever team of devs is willing to invest their time and effort to navigate their way through and share it with the rest of us. It took about four months to figure out how to root the Droid Eris, which is basically Verizon's version of the Hero.

I have been running this ROM for 2 days now with only 1 negative thing to say about it (so far). There are some apps in the market I can't see, but have found the .apk file for them on the net so it's not a big deal to me. Biggest reason for me to root and ROM was the wife NEED Epocrates for work and it only works on 1.6 and above. This ROM is a very good build and has been solid, V V M even works. I followed this procedure for rooting and backing up our phones [GUIDE] How To Root The Sprint CDMA Hero (Windows) - xda-developers. And yes, I used my phone as the guinea pig and flashed several different ROMs until I found one I liked. I even tested the nandroid backup to see if I could get back to original setup. Worked like a charm.

I'm still thinking of waiting another day or two...at least until the bugs are fully worked out. Damageless needs to update his first post with the fixes, because there's no way I can catch up on that thread, since I'm 200+ pages behind lol.

Damageless ROM is NOT 100% as claimed. No ROM is perfectly 100%, nor will Sprint's I would imagine.

Simply, you KNOW when you ROOT there are potential problems.
1 - you void your warranty,
2 - you might just Brick your phone, just cause it hiccuped during the Root/Flash process.

The people using the WRONG radio Update, well, that's another story altogether... Just think along the line of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

That said... I was going to root access my phone but decided to wait, let alone because I asked a simple question ( a few times) over there at XDA and never got replies, so there is no way, even though support is not implied or expected, that I would do it until after (MAYBE) the real 2.1 becomes available and then is taken apart.

No Offense to those over there at XDA, they are amazing. But I will wait, my phone works and does everything I need it to do just fine.

Yeah, I gave up trying to keep current, it got ridiculous. Mostly reading redundant bull because people don't take the time to read and learn and then post with real problems... Too annoying to read. Leave for a few hours then have 40-50 pages new. lol...

Be warned that this release is not 100%. Damages previous release was more stable for me. (And I tried wiping 3 times to get the new release to work)

I'm biting the bullet this time and going back to Fresh 1.1 and wading things out till the official release. Wiping and re-installing has been a daily chore for me as I've jumped everytime a new rom has come out. :(

It most definitely isn't 100% as claimed, but it works pretty well all in all.

If I go to my contacts menu, and one other place which I can't remember, all the options are blacked out until I put the trackball over them. Facebook doesn't seem to want to work at all, it doesn't have that "Friendstream" or whatever it's supposed to be, and I feel like I'm missing something else.

Like I said, though, it works well. The options bit isn't a big deal at all. You may have to use that once or twice, and it's still more than usable, you just have to move the trackball. The Facebook thing is actually quite irritating, but I'm sure he'll figure that out. Friendstream............. who cares.

If you're feeling froggy, go for it. I did also notice quite a substantial performance increase, I'd like to add.
