Just wondering if the Root for 2.2 on the EVO safe? I tried search but didn't find any matches. Also tried Google but not sure if those could be trusted.

Yes safe if you follow instructions and you can use unrevoked or simpleroot once you move down from2.2 to 2.1

All the instructions point to rooting a "stock" EVO 2.2 from Sprint. Nobody has mentioned if they were successful rooting a phone that was not stock with 2.2 and had accepted an update from Sprint to 2.2. Has anyone rooted and "updated" 2.2 that didn't come from Sprint with 2.2 on it?

Whether you updated your device to the official 2.2 from the OTA or got it from Sprint, they are the same update. Doesn't matter.

The rooting method rolls your phone back to 2.1 and then roots your phone from there.

i'm still a newbie myself but i'll see if i can help.

just rooted my EVO the past two days. two days b/c i was trying different ROMs and learning how to put Apps and Contacts back onto my phone. and yes, i did contemplated suicide when i was putting each app back one at a time.

    now, to your problem:
which method are you using and which command line were you typing?

Im using XDAs guide to root the 2.2 update ...and to be honest i made it to step 6 where u use adb to push those 5 files to the sd card. i did it word for word and after i hit enter after the first one it jus say error device not found. i really want to root but its hard to stay motivated with a bump this early in the road. blaahhh:confused:

I've moved a few posts here so they'd get the trouble-shooting attention they need. (And notified the users, so no one gets lost!)

Thanks in advance for any help here, everyone!

Did you install the drivers? Are you in debug mode?
