3G stopped working?!General

    My Eris recently stopped getting 3G (or even 1x) service. When I try turning mobile network on it takes a long time like its searching then says it is on but when you go into "about phone" and look at mobile network it says it is not connected and there is no 3G or 1x display in the status bar. I am currently at school in the bay area and it worked for the first few days I was here, not sure exactly when it stopped cuz I mostly use wireless but noticed it when I wanted to do something off wireless. Pretty sure it is not a coverage issue because my friend with a moto droid gets 3G and it is almost as fast as his wireless connection at full bars. Anyone have any ideas?

    Also now I cant send or receive MMS due to this (apparently cant transmit over wifi or voice signal), making my smart phone less useful than a dumb phone

    Mine has lost 3g/1x connection a few times. All I had to do was restart the phone and it came back. Also, the toggle to turn on mobile network will occasionally stop working. Resetting the phone seems to fix that as well.

    I have tried resetting it (turning it off/on, and even leaving the battery out for awhile and putting it back), unless you mean a complete hard system reset which I have not tried. This has not solved the issue, and I am still waiting on verizon to get back to me about this. Is a hard reset worth it? and if I have paid apps will they be there after the reset?

    Figured it out, unfortunately it required a hard reset. I had downloaded an application that had control to toggle mobile network on/off, and uninstalled it while mobile network was off, so the app had somehow changed a setting i couldnt access (reinstalling it didnt help) and turning it on/off on the phone had no effect

    Sorry that happened to you.

    I'm thinking that you should leave some feedback in the Marketplace that it is a malicious app, or contact the developer to let them know this happened.

    It is doubtful that it is actually purposefully malicious... but crap, if it turns your phone into a non-phone when it is uninstalled, someone needs to pay attention to that - having Google blacklist the developer will definitely get their attention. Either that, or it will get the app removed from the Market so it doesn't happen to more people.

    But, you ought to be 100% sure that is the reason your phone stopped working - if you are not sure, then maybe notifying the developer that you think that is what happened is a better course of action.

    I've noticed that mine keeps going from 1X to 3G. Not all the time but enough that I notice it. Mostly when I'm sending a text with Chomp SMS. It is not consistent with that though so I don't think it's ChompSMS doing it. Maybe VZW is upgrading their network in my area. It was doing it to my BB two weeks ago before I upgraded too.
    I know it's a little off topic but I was just wondering if anyone is having these problems in the NE of the US.

    I was having some 3G issues in Santa Cruz over Christmas, but that could also be where I was staying and the house itself, once I got on the street and in my car no issues, and you'd think if any place has decent 3G coverage it'd be the bay area. Happy New Year!

    This is an issue if i use wifi at home and leave, then connect to mobile data it will not work it acts if the internet is working but only shows the up arrow. I then have to reboot to get mobile data working to me this is no different then owning a Blackberry. It been 40 mins since i turned on mobile network and still not working.

    this seems to be happening a lot with many apps. i will add a tidbit to the tips and tricks thread in reference to the uninstalled apps locking things up.

    Just a heads up Quicksettings in the market is a problem with the eris. Once i unistalled and used the stock HTC widgets to control it works fine. I posted a comment about quicksettings and hopefully the author updates the program. If not just setup the HTC widgets.

    SMS never uses 3G - ever. The fact that you don't see the display roll to 1xRTT from 3G every time you send a text is probably just because SMS messages can be sent extremely quickly - a fraction of a second. Since the 3G/RTT display is only updated every once in a while, you won't see it flop back and forth every time a SMS is sent (or received) from your phone.

    Sooo hey guys... Has everyone's signal strength gotten better with the updates?? I am still having issues with the signal going from like 4 bars down to 1 bars, going from 3G down to 1x, etc... It seems like its been happening more recently (or maybe I just started noticing it more). I called Verizon and the tech support rep I spoke to said they had no tickets open for any service issues with this phone, which I told her it's BS because it's been a known issue. She told me the latest update should have resolved that...

    Sooo she wanted me to get a refurbished phone, which I DO NOT WANT... My phone's in perfect condition. Is everyone else still having the same issue, or is it just my phone? Thanks guys.

    It might be your phone - does it act like that in every location you use it, or only one or two locations?

    Here's a couple of things to bear in mind:

    - You will see the phone switch to 1xRTT anytime a SMS message is sent - that is normal behavior.

    - If you have WiFi turned on, and it connects to a AP (Access Point), you will see the "3G" display turn off - that is normal behavior. That also means that if you have your phone configured to connect automatically to unsecured networks named "linksys" - you'll probably see "3G" disappear a lot as you drive around :)

    - If you have both WiFi and Mobile network turned on, every time you send or receive a MMS message, you will see "3G" show up momentarily and then appear to turn off - that is normal behavior.

    - Radio reception is an odd thing; I normally have 3-4 bars of signal at my place... (-73 dBm), but there is one location in the house (a favorite chair) where I will get dropped calls, signal changing from 0-4 bars without moving the phone, et cetera... and that same behavior occurred with a different (Verizon) dumb-phone.

    It is possible that one place where you spend time (work, home) has unusual signal reception problems. You can only be confident that your phone is the source of the trouble if you experience the same troubles everywhere you take the phone.

    See, I had read on different forums that this has been an ongoing issue on the Droid and Droid Eris, so I wanted to verify this before going to Verizon and getting a damn refurbished phone :-( Or possibly switching to the Moto Droid. (I'm on my 3rd Eris due to other issues) I love the Eris and don't really wanna switch.

    Ehhh it seems to happen everywhere for me... I'll notice my phone could be in the same spot, and it goes from 4 bars, down to 0 bars, back up to like 3 bars etc... Constantly changing.. And while I'm at work, I notice it keeps going from 3G to 1x. (During all these times, I have the WiFi disabled... Especially at work, because the WiFi at work keeps knocking me off the internet.. It has WAP/WAP2 and for some reason that keeps kicking me off lol).

    Also, I've mostly noticed the 3G to 1x issue when I'm trying to surf the web.

  16. If I'm not wrong, I think I read two things somewhere on this on his forum:

    1. Some Eris's have crappy antennae right out of the factory.

    2. Other Eris' have something with the software, where it's a glitch or something (hopefully to be fixed with an update) that shows varying signal strengths, even when you're stationary. It'll go from one bar, to no bars, and just keep fluctuating in signal strength. I assume, all the while this is happening, your signal strength is fine, the phone is just acting up.

    I've noticed this with my phone at times, but it makes calls perfectly, even with no bars (which really only happens in my room in the house) and no dropped calls, static, etc.

    My phone suffers from this as well. I think that causes the battery to drain faster when the phone shows no bars - even though i can make a call and/or text.

    Okay I just got back from the Verizon store, and they said the same thing... They "dont know of any current issues with the Droid Eris concerning antenna or signal problems, and it's probably a problem with the internal antenna" of my phone. Sooo they wanted to give me a damn "Certified Like-New" replacement... Just called 611 and managed to get them to approve a new replacement, and I just have to go to a store and they will replace it. Uuuuggghhh lol. I LOVE my phone but I need it to not suck on signal!! If I wanted THAT, I woulda gone with AT&T :p haha.

    I am in the same boat tried uninstalling all the apps I downloaded. How do you do hard reset ? But can I save my phonebook first ?

    If you have your phone set to auto sync your contacts with your gmail account then when you reset your phone and sign in to your gmail it will import your contacts (if not sure turn on wireless data connectivity, go into settings and manually sync contacts)

    to hard reset:

    1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the Volume Down and Send buttons.

    2. Press the Power button.

    3. Follow the instructions to complete the hard reset.

    menu > settings > data synchronization > google > contacts

    unless you mean after the reset in which case it will prompt you to sign in to your gmail for the first time when you restart the phone (everything on the SD card will stay there and any apps you bought can be redownloaded without paying)

    if you have alot of apps i would make a list of the ones you have cuz you will have to redownload them all
