Not surprised. Oh well, I'll keep DX anyways. Had incredible before X, not going back...

Same here, there are too many things about the X that I like to go back to the Incredible. I'd feel like I'm downgrading.

Gingerbread may be the more vanilla interface we are looking for. I believe they are highly encouraging vendors to not skin it. We'll see!

That means absolutely nothing. I highly, HIGHLY doubt this phone will see an unskinned version of Gingerbread, and even if so, I highly doubt it's going to be that amazing on here as once we upgrade to it, we're screwed with the bootloader and everything else.

In all honesty, if Gingerbread doesn't make some gigantic stride towards being amazing and gaining the development support EVERY other OS out there is getting, then I'm going to go WP7 come January.

Seriously, they've got great apps already, and we're stuck with these same ol' apps with piss poor interfaces we've had since Android came to existence. I love Android to death, but they need to step up their game with the OS experience and development support.

Sorry to threadjack, but I think Mr. Birdman made the right choice to go to a different phone that you can haxor all you want instead of being left with this Blur ridden phone.

I am seriously thinking of ditching the X also. Moto has been the biggest B when it comes to any sort of development on their new phones. Its fine if they dont want everyday users to be able to attempt to hack/develop their phones.
But, when it gets so bad that people like Birdman decide enough is enough, thats frustrating and a sign to move on to me

I'd like to do the same, but until another phone with comparable hardware comes out, I can't justify it. This 4.3" screen and the awesome camera have spoiled me....

Exactly the same here. I love the phone. It's one of the best phones I've ever touched, but I hate the fact I can't mod it other than a few themes and some 1/2 potential ROMS.

Yea, not sure where to go from here myself. Samsung pissed me off back with my old Blackjack so not sure I could own a Samsung. That doesn't leave many Android players to choose from.

Supposedly the Saygus Vphone will be coming out on VZW here sometime soon? Its about the most developer friendly phone out there. Comes pre-rooted and all

I love my DX and hate to see it bashed on the forums because people don't like its inability to be totally hacked...

It just seems like pointless whining to me - the phone is great, its fast, you can root it and do whatever you want in terms of theming - you can even change CPU speeds with setCPU...

Its huge screen and top-notch specs make it THE premier phone on the market, and just because a few ROM developers can't do EVERYTHING they want with it makes people jump ship?

To those who plan to ditch the DX - I don't know what you expect from a device, but if you find something that this phone can't do, let me know.

Im just saying, android is for development which is why birdman is sick of the x's BS. If you want a fast phone that looks pretty and is super easy to use, get an iphone.

iPhone lacks depth that all android devices have.

Have you ever themed an iphone or replaced its keyboard or lockscreen? Have you ever customized widgets and chosen your own launcher on an iphone?

There is plenty of development you can do for any android device, without ever touching the bootloader.

I'm genuinely curious - what, specifically, do people feel like they are missing out on with the DX as a result of the bootloader being locked?

Have you even looked at any other "all things root" besides the droid x's? They have custom built kernals, OCed, themed, and able to get 2 days run time off them. And yes, I have dont all of the above on an iPhone, it sucks

What is the benefit of a custom kernel? I honestly have no clue about what can be gained here...

Overclocking taxes hardware inappropriately and burns it out prematurely. If it were intended to run at a higher speed, the MFG would have set it higher. Additionally, the phone is powerful enough to handle whatever I throw at it without overclocking, so there is not much value to be had there.

Theming, as was already mentioned is available on DX, and easily accomplished with deodexed themes being distributed as a simple zip file.

In terms of battery life, after upgrading to the extended battery and using roms that have pared down blur & optimized battery use, I'm at 70% at the end of a typical day - so I don't feel deprived in this area at all. Compare this to my wife's Evo which doesn't last 5 hours of 0 use, and you can see the X shine.

The grass is always greener on the other side, but my feeling with the DX is the grass is pretty freakin' green right here! :D

For me at least it was the addiction that I had to flashing roms. And I bought the X knowing that there was a possibility that I would be getting rid of it in 2 months.

I came from the Incredible and I feel like this phone is a significant upgrade....sit tight, Q1/Q2 '11 is gonna bring some very interesting choices with LTE launching...why would you want to switch to a lesser phone so you can hack it more than the other ones when dual core, 1.5GHz chips are going to be the norm in the next wave of phones. In case you haven't noticed, 5 ROM's and 3 themes have rolled out in the past week and they are pretty kick ass. I also had a Fascinate for 3 weeks before this and that thing is half baked compared to the DX.

While it's always disappointing to read someone talented is no longer helping the X cause, in no way will it affect my decision to stay. My hope is that someone will find a way to crack the bootloader, if not it's not the end of the world.
By next August when the 1yr contract runs out there most likely will be 4g phones available with stunning features and hopefully a few with crackable bootloaders to choose from.
