I'm going to turn 16 in a few months and I'm going to try to find a job at a place involving electronics.. Something like radio shack or best buy but I don't think they employ anyone under 18.. Any ideas? I don't want an average job flipping burgers or bagging groceries :(

I think for best buy you have to be at least 18 now, unless they changed it again. I used to work there awhile ago too. It was the worst job I've ever had. Come to think of it I think a lot of places especially electronic stores are requiring people to be at least 18 to be able to work there.

I love the sense of entitlement of "I don't want to flip burgers"

Ask yourself though.... will you? Will you flip burgers if you have to? I didn't want to either, but I put myself through college on what I jokingly call the "Dave Thomas Scholarship Plan" I agree to work 70 hours a week, for just over minimum wage, in hot conditions, serving drunk spring breakers, all the way to cheap snowbirds who would stand in line for 20 minutes in order to save the $1 on the superbar @ 4:00pm when the price dropped to $2.99 instead of 3.99, and Wendy's agreed to pay me money that I could use to pay my tuition and books.

I can understand not wanting to work at a fast food place, but 16 y.o. guys need to realize, they are not entitled to the best jobs out there. Tell me, what have you done to demand that job you want? what makes you more qualified for that job than someone that is 18? is it your education???? your experience????

I'm sorry to sound harsh, but take what you can get and be happy you got that. Lots of people want to gripe about unemployment, but when people refuse paying jobs because "it's beneath me"...

Yeah, I assumed most stores required you to be 18.. That's why I was asking around. Why didn't you like working at best buy though?

Yes, I actually do think I will end up working at a local grocery store.. I was just wondering if there was a place I could work that involved things that I was really interested in. I did kind of an internship kind if thing with one of my uncles friends creating websites, and while I made a lot of money compared to most of my friends with summer jobs I really don't think I want to go into something like that, and I'm positive I don't want to flip burgers for the rest of my life haha

well, I dang sure also didn't want to flip burgers.... esp for the rest of my life.

I used it as motivation.... because I did work with the 35 y.o. burger flippers who thought they were Dave Thomas' gift to Wendys... and I still laugh when I see them, even 15 years later, STILL flipping burgers at 50

You're right, it is good motivation. I work at a 'food place' for minimum wage to help pay for college. I'm there early every morning and sometimes again in the evening, and I KNOW that I don't want to spend my life doing this (like some of the people there).

It's a little nicer than a burger joint though, so it comes with the awesome perk of a free meal. May not seem like much to a 16 year old, but sure helps a lot in college

Something to be said about how essential this job is to you though. Is it just to get some extra spending money? Or is the money really needed. Not to mention, flipping burgers can be fun if you're not doing it 40 ( or 70!) hours a week XD

I burned the **** out of my hand on the frenchfriers though. Grease everywhere, you smelled of it at home.... Just do your time, and realize, all them "super-chiefs" that work there will still be there, while you are out.

dang, now I'm jealous.... I was too white and male to be as average as I was. I got ZERO scholarships. Of course, my parents made too much for as being as white as they were, so I got nothing.

but, it can be done. Parents offered to pay, but I said no. I would rather earn it...means more. that's not saying I wouldn't have taken scholarship, but that's earning it a different way.

Either way, if you got a job, now you can look for better, all the while, having the crappy job at least paying you.

Anyone in my school district that has fine from kindergarten to senior year gets tuition paid for as long as you start in state.. And I feel like only an idiot would pass up an offer like that. But it doesn't look like I've got any good ideas as far as jobs go :(
