I have been looking EVERYWHERE for a guide to just root my Droid.

Everything I see has rooting + installing some other Rom or 2.1 or whatever, yet not one of them says at one point, "Congratulations, you've rooted your phone! Now on to the next step!"

Where do I find instructions to just root????

    ARGH!

I haven't rooted my yet but from what that guide is stating, steps 1 - 5 are the steps to root the phone. Will probably be rooting mine to get wifi tethering once it is available, should be soon.

Here's the definitive guide, I believe:

    How to Root your Droid

What I want to know: what will I gain by rooting, assuming I do not want to add a custom ROM?

This guide mentions using "adb shell". What is it and how does one get it?

If you find the proper 2.0.1 update w/root already added to it then you won't need ADB (which is android debugging bridge, it runs through a CMD).

IMO, this is the most concise guide for rooting a DROID.

The first 10 steps = ROOT. But you might-as-well complete the next two sections. It makes working with your phone much easier ... and those steps really aren't that hard, nor risky.

If you do decide to flash to the 2.1 firmware, you would want to follow THIS GUIDE. It is the most up-to-date and concise guide I have found.

Hope this helps. Clear as mud, right? ;)
