playing around with one of the phones that requires adb to root (not sure why, but it's a cheap phone so that may be it) i managed to get it to show and work with adb shell. following the instructions i managed to enable logs, and type in some Linux command stuff i didn't understand, but it eventually gave me an error and my phone froze and it wouldn't reboot in adb shell. so i manually did a battery pull, and when it booted back up, i went back into adb shell and it gives me a root prompt (# sign) and i got clockwork mod on there. weird. now i'm flashing ROM!

Many of the cheaper generic devices come pre-rooted. My Skypad A2 ($100 7" tablet) came pre-rooted. They don't have to offer support and don't care whether you screw it up or not.

It wasn't pre rooted but I must have busted through some generic exploit. Either way I got a nice rom on it and some root only apps and very happy.
