Hi all, does the phone need to be activated to install an app?

I have an older Optimus that hasn't been activated for about a year. I want to experiment with rooting it and hoped I could play with this. I can access the Play store through WiFi but when I logged in and installed File Manager it actually installed on my Samsung Galaxy that uses that gmail account. What the heck? I have gingerbreak copied to the SD on the Optimus but need a file manager to reach it, I think.
    thanks.

The phone has to be linked to the Google account for downloading apps from Play Store.

I'm doing this with an old phone without carrier :)

that's what I'm wondering; how do I link the Optimus to a Google account without it activated?
I'm now trying the SuperOneClickv2.3.3-ShortFuse to see if I can do it from the PC.
    thanks
