Alternate Upgrade - Unlimited DataGeneral

I would like to get this phone when it comes out however I am not due for an upgrade until next year.

I have two options. 1. Wait until next year for whatever latest and greatest 2. Upgrade to the Bionic this year with my wife's upgrade.

If I decide to go with the Bionic I will be doing an alternate upgrade which I read about in a couple threads but I have some concerns and wanted to get some feedback.

If I use my wife's upgrade I will need to add a data plan since she only has a flip-non smart phone. A couple questions: Will I be able to remove the data plan after switching her back to the dumb phone? Will I be able to keep my grandfathered unlimited plan if I add the new phone to my line?

I assume if I were to buy the phone without contract at retail price I would be able to add it to my existing line and keep the unlimited data.

    Any constructive feedback is appreciated.

    Thanks for your help!

I think that if you upgrade your wife to a smartphone, just do the *228 method and punch in YOUR number and not your wife's.

This will activate the Bionic on your line and it should keep you grandfathered in. But when you upgrade, you are adding the $30 per month onto your wife's line, so I'm not sure how to fix that, unless you just go in and cancel it. But if you do that, they might ask for the difference between the subsidized phone and the non-contract phone.

And is your wife okay with you using her upgrade and keeping her on her dumbphone?

Seems kind of unfair. (Hey, most of my feedback was constructive!)

Sounds good, a couple forums that I read suggested that I should be able to cancel the data on the other line as long as it does not have a smart phone, apparently you sign a contract for the phone and not data but not really sure. Thanks for your reply.

The wife is OK, she does not want a smart phone. I try to get her to use my Droid X and she plays with it for a minute and gives it back.

Whoa wait a minute guys...this is all wrong. Doing an alternate upgrade isn't upgrading your wife's phone then putting that phone on your line. Thats just a standard upgrade then doing an ESN change. An alternate upgrade is transfering the upgrade from one line to the other. In effect making the line you want eligible while extending the contract on the line that originally had an upgrade.

Oooohhhhhh, yeah I didn't know that. Extending the contract on the other line and switching the upgrade to your phone sounds like a much better idea.

Oh and jreed, love your avatar. Best show ever!!

Exactly right. I came into this thread to say just this :D I do alternate upgrades for people all the time and it doesn't effect anything on their account beyound extending the contract.
