Today's app - Baseball Superstars is a really fun game. I was really addicted to this game a couple years ago on my iPhone.

Today's free app from Amazon: Retro Camera Plus. This is a 'special' version (3.6) for Amazon, where the current version on Google's Market is 3.5. The main difference is this app has permissions to see your contacts data, which has stirred a controversy about why this is necessary and is this version spyware. Any insights?

It needs these permissions to send pics to contacts and to share with facebook.

I read the description from the app's creator and some comments that followed. Does the app do any more than set an alarm and tell you what app is available? It would be nice if you could select categories of apps that you are interested in, and only get an alarm when a free app in those categories is available. Does the notification remain on if you miss the alarm?
I'm not overloaded with apps, but it seems like every other day or so, I have to update an app, even though I select automatic updating whenever available. So every day I check the Amazon market and the Google market, see which of my apps need updating, and check the free app of the day at Amazon. I would think this reminder app would become somewhat of an annoyance.

Yes, (for now) it only notifies you of what the free app of the day is.

It would be a neat idea, try posting these ideas in the above noted forum where the developer is working on it. He may not be looking here for suggestions. Since it is only version 1.0 and it only just came out (not even in the market yet), there is always room for improvement. The dev even asks for such ideas in his forum, where you got the app from.

Yes, it remains in your notification bar until you clear it.

Then don't use it. As with any app some may find it useful, and some don't.

Dumb question--when updates are available for apps I've downloaded through AppStore, where can I see the change log? Depending on what's been updated I may or may not bother with downloading a new version.

In Google Market there's a "Recently changed in this version" section at the bottom of the description.

As far as I know, they don't have one. You can always search for the application in the Market and see what was recently changed; I doubt it will be different.

Definitely annoying that you have to go to Google market to see the changelog.

being a business, person, I actually prefer the free tools as opposed to the daily free games.

Same here, I have very few games on my phone, but a nice game every once in a while is nice

SOOO, do you remember when I posted on this thread WAY back when I wrote a friendly email to Amazon about their app store telling them I love the new app store but it would be nice if they implemented a 2 step buying process to prevent customers from accidentially buying apps in error?? They wrote back and thanked me for my input and that they would send it along for review in future. I hope others here also sent an email for this.

Well, they indeed listened. Android central just reported Amazon app store has an update to their app store to include this feature. How cool is it that they are listening to the customers? It's a rare thing in this day and age. lol

This is great news. I personally never had a problem with it, but that isn't to say that I would not have accidentally bought something in the future. It seems quite a few companies are listening to the Android community lately.

Heard about MOTO and HTC finally unlocking bootloaders? Glad the community is growing fast enough that companies are starting to have to listen to us!

PS... I intentionally did not include links to the bootloader stories to try to keep the thread on topic.

If you don't get the update automatically, you can push it to your phone.

On my phone, I went to
Open app store>Menu>More>Settings>Scroll down little to Version>Click the blue button says "Check for Update"

This will push it to your phone, for me it took about 2 mins and it showed up in my notifications panel, then I went to my phones settings and checked to allow 3rd party downloads and then it works. Then I go back and uncheck it, don't want to keep it check all the time, right. :)

I keep mine checked all the time for all the daily free apps I try out, plus all the non market beta versions of apps that I test out. It doesn't hurt anything as long as you know what you are installing

I think I read somewhere on this forum not to keep it checked because if you accidentially click on an advertisement or ad it could potentially download 3rd party software without you knowing.

Hey guys, this is my first post here, though I've been following this thread for a while. Does anybody have any idea where the downloaded APK files are for apps purchased through the Amazon store? I've gotten a few of the daily apps that I haven't installed yet - I don't want to bother trying to run them on my pos Droid but wanted to grab them for when I upgrade later this year. But during the purchase process the app was downloaded, so I assume there are APK files sitting on my phone somewhere taking up valuable space. Am I right about this, and if so does anyone know where they are? Thanks!

This doesn't really answer your question, but may hopefully be helpful.
If your phone is rooted, once installed, you can backup the APK files to SD card or to a Dropbox account using Titanium Backup, and then just delete them from internal memory if you don't plan on using them any time soon. That's what I do sometimes.
I hope this is helpful to you.

You don't need to worry about backing them up, once they are downloaded they are linked to your account and when you change phones you can simply download them again for free on you new phone.

This is correct if you want to go this route. You can backup any app using Titanium backup

Thanks to both of you for the replies, but let me clarify - I'm not looking to back up the files, I want to get rid of them. Chuzzle, for example - I got it during its free day but didn't even try to install it on this phone; I'm going to wait till I upgrade, but since it was downloaded I'm assuming that 20 mb apk file is sitting on my phone somewhere taking up space. I'm wondering where that file is so I can delete it until I'm ready to download it again. Any thoughts?

Edit - Forgot to mention, my phone's not rooted.

    Rob.G Well-Known Member

Well, the app is in your internal memory, located in /data/app/.

However, since you are not rooted, you should probably install the file, then uninstall it. This way you would be able get it out of your system. Then just reinstall it on your next device.
