I know everyone wants the latest and greatest (yes. me included) but are some of us just wanting to keep up with Jones`s ??.. I bought my device knowing I had an older version, but liked the phone itself better....

Anyway, I have read on the differences till my eyes have bled and looked on a timetable for the older Motorola devices...My real question is, what can a 2.1 Droid device really do that mine cant at 1.6??.. And out of that, I wonder, what would I really use anyway?? Are those of us wanting the 2.1 just being selfish ??

The 1.5 and 1.6 devices worked well, and people have loved them until the newer 2.1 showed up on the scene... Im curious, if we do get 2.1 in Q3 but then Shadow shows up with 2.2 will people still be unhappy??

Which will be the Android benchmark and start the one year updates??

    ;)

Easy answer would be the ability to pinch zoom, live wallpapers, and speed but also the fact that few devs write programs for older devices, the ps one emulator in the works will only work on handsets with 2.0 or later. I'm worried if a netflix app or hulu app is released I won't be able to access them.

Honestly, I WANT MULTI-TOUCH. I feel like the lack of multi-touch affects the on-screen keyboards greatly. And yes, I want pinch-to-zoom as well.

Yeah... I guess a speed boost would be nice.... Even without those things, I still dont dislike my device, but would love to be able to say mine is "updated"... Like I said, maybe I'm just being selfish...heh

Helix Launcher, adw, launcher pro. IMO the best three home alternatives out there and are only available for 2.0+ Thats just the home apps. As 2.1 now covers almost half of all android handsets, Most devs are writing apps for eclair. Any new, cool idea that comes out will more than likely be the same story.

2.1 provides little if any "performance boost"

But 2.2 is supposed to have a massive performance boost.

because devices with mfg implimented UI (ie HTC Sense, MotoBLur) are very very slow to receive updates to OS. It doesn't even have 2.1 yet. I would be willing to bet it will still be waiting at the end of the summer. It might have it by the end of the year. Then the clock with start for 2.2

Lets look at the timeline for the eris. there were talks of 2.1 being tested in january and february. Then in march, the beta versions of 2.1 started to leak out. Finally in May they got the official 2.1 update. All this after it was announced back in December that the Eris would be receiving 2.1. they haven't even acknowledged that the devour will get 2.1. So I would say after you actually hear an official announcement about 2.1 for the devour, then you'll have about six months before you actually get it.

I will be on a test device within the next two weeks running a stock android. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried out 2.2 on it.

Some of the apps that I hear good things about aren't in my market and I think it's because I'm running 1.6. But I deal.
