Well, let the conversation begin - Android 2.2 Packs 5x Performance Boost, says Report - PCWorld
Do want! But for now ill be happy with 2.1 on my eris. And i might be getting an Incredible soon.
Probably will never get an official release for it.. I will install a cooked rom when it comes..
i have 2.2 now, it aint all that.
Me too, running the second version of the leak. Are you still running the first? 2.2 V2 fixed a lot of V1's bugs. How do you like flash?
Caddy is that 2.2 with Sense or the stock Android 2.2 ? Installed on your Eris, perhaps? (maybe that's not possible without Sense)
no im messing with you guys, im super sick right now, feel like crap, i make dumb posts when i dont feel good.
Aw man, I can't believe I bit !!!!!
Just because it has that much performance boost on one piece of hardware doesn't mean it will have that much affect on the Eris. Calm down people.
This is true. However, the Microsoft way of thinking means that you have to get bigger and faster because their OS's get more bloated. Apple broke that pattern with several updates and Google is likely to do the same. I think that Google is actually shooting for more efficieny over power hungry. Makes sense on a battery limited smart phone.
sounds awesome, but come on now people! we are just getting the 2.1 take your time and enjoy it. god knows you have been waiting for it long enough. i wonder how the forum attendance will change now that people wont be checking on here for the OTA and posting about how much they want it.
I, yourself, and many others have been on 2.1 for a while now. OTA is just making it official. I'm happy with everyone finally getting on board. The forum attendance will shrink when there isn't something compelling to bring them back. Root will be the next big thing that everyone waits on I suppose.
Oh, here we go.
If 2.1 isn't enough for you, buy a different phone. I bought mine for Google Navigation and tethering. That is it. Unless they come out with an application that turns my phone into a kitten-huffing device, I have no need for anything beyond 2.1. Skype is about the only other thing I might consider trying.
Now hold on. I'm not saying that 2.1 is bad. I love my Eris and am happy with the OS I have. I don't expect another OS upgrade between now and next year. The OP brought up a good topic of discussion and talking about 2.2 doesn't necessarily imply that we think 2.1 is junk.
Just because YOU don't want anything more out of your phone doesn't mean that those of us that do should buy something else.
Sure, I'm happy with 2.1, but why wouldn't I be interested in something that could possibly increase it's performance by up to 5x? And how is it that you know there isn't something in 2.2 that you'll want when there is so very little info about it available? What OS are you using on your computer? I hope it's nothing newer than Win98 because that worked just fine too.
I just got off the phone with VZW and HTC, asked them both when I could expect 2.2 since 2.1 is already out. They said it would be soon and they are already testing it. Said it should be coming in about a month.
A month is about right but don't cry when Santa passes up Eris owners this go-round.
I got tired of waiting and bought the Incredible. It beats the hell out of the iphone and is much faster than my Eris. The Eris was a good start but after 6 momths of carier neglect it was time to upgrade to a real powerhouse.
Google had mentioned something about trying to reduce fragmentation of Android (by moving the apps out of the OS altogether). That way every phone could run the same version of the OS, and the only difference would be the apps layered on top of that. So it's not far-fetched that we'll receive a future Android update, since Google expressed an interest in having all phones running the same version:
Exclusive: Android Froyo to take a serious shot at stemming platform fragmentation -- Engadget
It might or might not give us additional features or speed, but the point of it is to make it easier for developers to develop apps without having to test them on five different operating system versions.
android 2.5 has a native Doctor App and a Nurse app to make you soup.
me and the secondary Android Dev team have been working on 2.5 since 2.0 came out
I'm already running 2.5 on Verizon's super secret 4G network. It ain't bad, but it could be better.
make sure you download iDROID. It has a whole bunch of apps showing how steve jobs would react if
Google bought Apple
Android became number 1 Mobile OS
Bill Gates personally buys Apple
OTD actually reveals herself
and other highly amusing scenarios
Can you pm me the .apk for that?
If Eris gets 2.2, then it surely will increase performance. Android 2.2 enables JIT (Just in Time). People who have been running it on the Droid say it very clearly improves performance an benchmarking, but this is on baked roms, and enabling JIT can be very flaky at times (which is why I haven't tried it)...I would think (and hope) that it would be an even BIGGER improvement on lesser hardware, but I'm not sure..
