Android 2.3.3 and Background Data

Under accounts and sync, I keep background data and auto sync off to conserve battery life. I used to be able to turn both on and off using the power control widget or going into the settings page. I updated to 2.3.3 awhile back and havn't been able to turn background data off through the widget. If I go through the settings page I have to click it a total of three times (including the popup saying some apps might not function) before it goes away. Is there a fix for this?
