Android 2.3 update Safe?General

    It's been about a month and a bit now since the first update of 2.3 came out. After all the problems they pulled the update and then put it back on, but i still heard complaints. I've been following threads still and am wondering if it is safe to update yet or if it's not worth the trouble and just stay with a 2.1 LG Shine Plus? Thanks for you opinions in advance.

    My opinion is stay with 2.1 until you see a new thread with at least 20 posts that a new version of 2.3.x (not v20A) is problem free.

    Unless you want to root and play around with custom rom's, the LG 2.3.3 update and the associated problems are irreversible. If you are still under warranty, Telus will send you a refurb phone which may or may not have issues themselves. I have gone through a couple refurb exchanges (bad sliders, non working bluetooth or voice control). Most came with 2.1 v10c. My most recent one was a surprise, it was shipped with V10d. If no problems develop, I am going to keep that one.

    If you are out of warranty, you will have to live with the problems or play around with rooting.

    Thanks I think i'll wait till a new update although I'm pretty convinced there won't be one.

    Stay with 2.1because of all the problems you will have if you update to 2.3.3.

    Random screen freezes
    Bluetooth connectivity
    Nuance unadaptability
    Random WIFI disconnects

    When you contact LG and ask for solutions to these problems they just tell you to return the phone to Telus for service. They are not willing to admit that their update was flawed.

    I have the issues listed with my Shine, I had a perfectly good 2.1(D) version but updated to 2.3.3 to get the app2sd feature.
    Big mistake as I now have the freeze (seems to be telephone + wifi related), no more BT with my Toyota and the other issues. There is no supported way to revert to 2.1 so beware.
    I have it on good authority that Telus has put pressure on LG to find a fix as LG is the one reponsable for the O/S update. Telus only checks that what LG is putting out appears to function correctly on their network... ie they can not independently 'just fix it' themselves....

    Just my 2 cents and worth exactly what you paid me for it!

    Well, the screen freezes/wifi disconnects are probably related. Some sort of sleep functionality buggering.

    Bluetooth has a fix:

    If you open LG App Advisor after the upgrade, they'll recommend you install Vlingo - which some others have had success with post upgrade rather than using Nuance.

    I personally only experience the screen freezing issue about once every three days. If I pull the battery and reboot, I'm annoyed mostly.

    You folks are right - LG should fix this issue, sooner rather than later. However, in the meantime, it's not the worst update ever.

    I saw a flyer (London Drugs) that the Shine Plus is being pushed for sale and it seems that the Telus website has some added information to the LG Shine Plus page. Does anybody know if a new LG Shine Plus ships with 2.3.3?

    Also, I would encourage all to post a review of the Shine Plus on Telus' website for all to see. I still like this phone. It is just the software update which is causing me the grief. It would be nice to have apps2SD and Google voice search which is only available in 2.2+.

    On Tuesday, some Telus customer service phoned me out of the blue to ask me if everything was okay with my phone or plan. I told her about the troubles and asked her to check out site to see the complaints. She said Telus has some problems with the phone. She said she will contact the Loyalty program to see if they could do anything for me.

    Ya I think i'll stick with my 2.1, but i do think all of us posting on the telus site will get a fixed update out cause they don't want a bad rep.

    I did the update and wish I didn't. I have more problems with the update than previously but I can use it for a hotspot now. that is the only plus.
    turning off and on by itself
    black screen when not used for one to ten minutes depending on how it feels that day
    force closes everything, facebook, games, launcher pro, Rdio, you name it.

    I took my wifes lg shine plus back to telus to get fixed yesterday. Will let you know what its like when I get it back. I'm betting it comes back with 2.1

    Was the phone updated to Android 2.3.3 or still running 2.1? When I got my replacement from Telus (in store) after my original phone was totally locked after updating to Android 2.3.3 they gave me a new LG Shine Plus running Android 2.1 version 10d after three hours of my ranting and raving. Please keep us informed as to what happens with you.

    you phone will still work after the 2.3.3 update, but be prepared to be annoyed because the black screen makes me wanna throw my phone some times.. the app 2 sd feature is good though..

    I advise you to try Root you phone and play around with custom roms.. I am sure somebody on here will be more than happy to help you or answer any questions you have about it.. however don't blame me if something goes wrong

    The lockup problem hasn't happened to me in a long time now as I remember to turn wifi off whenever I am not using it.

    The biggest problem I'd say with the update is that the battery life went from bad to atrocious. I'll be lucky to get 4 hours off a full charge now.

    my battery life isn't any worse than it was before.. I think different ppl are experiencing different problems.. it's a roll of the dice to see which ones you get

    :mad:I wish I'd never updated. Before, I had zero problems, now I have lots. Screen-freezes, lockups, bluetooth crashes. Stupid LG. Don't they test things before they release them?:mad:

    Re: battery issues. While I still had a 2.3.3 phone, I did notice that the battery was not as good as under 2.1, but never to the point of just dying after 4 hours. There is a wonderful free app called "Power Tutor". It may help you to identify which app is causing your battery drain. I use it to compare two apps to help me choose the less power hungry one.

    Re: Bad Update: Unless you want to root, I would suggest that you contact Telus and demand a replacement phone. If under warranty, that would be a no brainer. If out of warranty, if you make enough noise, maybe they will still send you a refurbed phone.

    It seems whenever I brag on here how I haven't gotten the black screen in a while, it happens like a bunch of times in a row shortly afterwards. It's almost like a jinx.

    I'm going to try out Power Tutor. This is a real annoying problem.

    I wonder if there's any chance Telus would honour the warranty for a non-Telus customer? I bought my Shine Plus second-hand from Craigslist and have never been a Telus customer. I'm probably out of luck...

    Same here. Last time I tried contacting Rogers for a phone bought from them, they refused to help me... Telus' service is no better I imagine.

    I updated my LG Shine a few days after the update became available and yes there are some annoyances that need to be fixed but, on the whole, I am glad I did the update. First off though, I don't use blue tooth at all so I don't know if mine works or not.

    However, my battery life went from totally crappy on 2.1 to downright awesome after the update. I used to get barely a full day out of it with hardly any use at all. Often I would have to recharge my phone by early evening in order for it to last all day. Now I can power use my phone all throughout the day and only be down to about 60%-70% by the time the end of the day rolls around. Storing apps on the SD card is also a huge plus. I also find most of my apps run faster but the phone takes longer to boot up from fully powered down.

    If you don't use blue tooth, I recommend the upgrade. Yes the occasional freezes are annoying as is the wifi freezing up (rest of the phone still works fine for me though even when this happens) but I think the benefits of apps to sd and massively increased battery life are well worth the other annoyances.

    I also haven't had the phone freeze on me now for a number of weeks. In fact I can't even remember the last time it froze. Wifi usually jams up on me once a day though but it seems to do it more frequently in areas of my house where the wifi signal is weaker and hardly ever freezes in areas with a strong wifi signal. Maybe the signal strength has something to do with it.

    For battery life, I also recommend a free app called Juice Defender. I downloaded it shortly before the upgrade and it does seem to have a pretty big increase in battery life.

    If you don't mind me asking, how much do you use your phone ie checking email, IM, camera etc.?

    I froze a bunch of apps that showed up as power hogs and I can still only get about 4 hours. I found Juice Defender (even Ultimate), not making a difference at all.

    Is your phone rooted? What programs do you mainly use on your phone?

    if I have learned anything from this.. it is to not rush to update my phones software as soon as I notice an update is available.. it is better to wait and see what the bugs are first
