I am a little disappointed though that my HTC Hero can't play avi movies.
Will this be possible for Hero owners in the near future? With a ROM update or anything else?

This is quite a biggie actually, I was more than a little surprised to find that the Hero does not (yet) play .avi.

In a wish list, I would also like the hero to play MKV files, as I've just finished backing up 200+ dvds into mkv format and cant play a single one on my handset.

*sigh*, perhaps I need to go back to getting a phone that I use for making calls :D

Which formats does the hero support ? Is there no app that supports avi's ?
