When I go into my battery menu, it says under battery use, that the android system is using (on average) around 50% with cell standby at 23% and apps all in the single digits. I barely run any apps, so could this be an issue with how many widgets i have set up?

For my home screen i have the large HTC clock w/ weather. On the next screen i have weather channel, htc stocks, htc news. On the next i have friendstream, then pandora and music player. Anything else I can do to make android use less?

Yeah, thats a lot of data using widgets I think and they are probably sucking away battery. If you have Gps on, the weather widgets may also be using it as well, not sure though
