Android Mail app taking up huge amounts of space on (Android 2.3.3)

My Mail app was taking up 145MB so I decided to delete both of my accounts because i was not able to delete old emails, even after changing the syncing settings. After deleting all accounts, the app still says it is taking up 42MB in Data. Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a solution? I'm considering resetting the entire phone (htc evo 4g) to factory settings because it's ridiculous taking up 42MB for doing nothing at all.

Switch to K9, set download limit to like 256K, only sync folders you need on your phone (like "inbox")... even with the "limit" you can download the whole message manually if you want to look at the attachment. My K9 says 3.9mb (email and gmail are just a few K, I don't use them), that's after 6 months.
