I've been keeping my eye on the new android phones for a while now, in particular those with a full keyboard. I know the G1 has a full keyboard, but it feels kinda outdated, so when I upgrade my phone, I would like it to be new off the line.

So I saw the HTC Lancaster, then the news about its potential cancelling/delaying. I was dismayed, because I thought the Lancaster looked nice and it would be on AT&T, but I'd still be flexible to switch networks if need be.

Aside from the G1, what would you all recommend for an android phone - known to upcoming, rumored, whatever - that has a builtin keyboard?

Motorola is coming out with the Sholes on Verizon and the Morrison on T-Mobile. Both of which will have full hardware keyboards.

Yeah, the sholes does look nice. I don't like the idea of cdma though.

Out of curiosity, what is it about CDMA that makes you want to avoid it? My experience has been that the CDMA network has been pretty good, and I've had fewer dead zones with Verizon than with other carriers.

(I'm not criticizing - just curious what I'm missing.)

    Thanks!

Nothing against the network. I just like being able to but unlocked phones. With cdma you're completely stuck with whatever the network offers. I guess that's a bigger deal in Canada though cause we have 3 year contracts. Then again, half the time it's better not to get a new contract cause prices just keep going up..

Ah. So it's not the CDMA technology per se that you don't like, but rather the lack of ability to swap out a SIM card or something that makes the phone usable on some other network? That makes a lot of sense. It would be nice to know that once my contract was up I could just take my phone and move to another network if I wanted to - although so far whenever I've come to that decision point I've wanted a new phone anyway, so it didn't matter too much from a practical standpoint. :D

Just out of curiosity, do you happen to know if the new LTE (I think that's right...) network that Verizon is rolling out will play more nicely with others than the CDMA network does? I'm pretty sure it doesn't really matter for phones out this year, and probably not really for 2010, but that seems like a good question for future reference.

I too like the idea of have a SIM that I could move to another device (or transfer files with using a usb adapter), but if it's the only thing available I'd make do. Just from the pictures the Sholes looks better, too.

So both of those are rumored for September. Any others I should keep an eye on?

well, for me, it's more to do with having different devices on the same network rather than having the same device on a different network. You know?

yeah, I'd like to know a bit more about LTE. Will it use SIM cards or something similar?

The sholes and morrison should be announced on the 10th and most likely available in october. They're really the only ones I can think of with keyboards that aren't just completely rumours..
