I know nothing of android but my brother is coding in school and said he wants an android phone. My mother and I want to buy him one for Christmas but I don't know if any android phone that rogers sells will be what's he's looking for. Please let me know if anybody has any idea what we should be looking for. Thank you guys. :)

I would recommend the Sony Xperia X10. It has androids latest OS and a 8.0MP Camera. All android phones kills any Iphone in terms of customizable personality. I have the HTC magic, the only thing I hate about it is that there is no flash on the camera. Also with android phones you can change memory cards and theres tons of apps. Not as many as the Iphone but still great apps.
I hope this helps you out :)

I would not recommend the SE Xperia X10 for your brother as he would probably like a system where you can install custom ROMS (or versions of Android), or at least a more "open" system, if he's coding or likes to modify his phone. Also, the X10 is still using Android 1.6 which is an outdated version, 2.1 is supposed to be on the X10 later this month/year though. If it's only to use as a phone, or especially if your brother uses social networks, this would be a good phone because of TimeScape and it is rootable (i.e. it will allow him to do modifications, but not change the ROM).

However, if you want to stay with Rogers you don't have many options (Xperia family, and an Acer phone, I think that's it?), unless you buy an unlocked phone like the HTC Desire or the Google NexusOne and use it on Rogers' network.

Hi guys, just giving you an update on my progress.
I tried looking into the google nexus one and the htc desire since they are more customizable for coding.
The google nexus one seems to be hard to get in canada (other than buying from ebay) so I am just shopping around looking into the htc desire store options.
Thanks again both of you for all your help :)

Mobilicity is apparently going to be selling the Nexus One, so if you can afford it, you could buy it for the full price, unlock it, and use it on Rogers, however I believe you will NOT get 3G speeds in that case (but Edge instead) unless someone can correct me on that?

The Nexus One is the only Google phone you are pretty much guaranteed will have the most up to date version of the OS.

You can buy one directly from Google, but you have to "pretend" to be a developer (pay the $25 dev fee) an then you can order the phone.

The Galaxy-S Captivate is now available at Rogers. Since it has Android 2.1, I think you should go with that one if you stick with Rogers. I didn't try it myself though. I personnally have an Xperia x10 and loving it :)

The devphone version of the N1 is not compatible with Rogers 3G either. The only way to get an N1 for Rogers now is to buy it off someone. :(

You would have to buy it from someone in the US who got it from a carrier using the same freqs as Rogers. Any of the Canadian N1s (Mobilicity, Videotron) use the non-rogers 3G freqs. They will work on Rogers, just not at 3G speeds. The Google Dev version is the same.

You can get a Samsung Captivate from Rogers, it will see Froyo in mid-december. I have confirmed email from Samsung telling me this.

I also have a Captivate myself and it is an absolutely fantastic device. Not as good as a Nexus One, but very close to it.

    Mobilicity - Product Detail

Nexus One is still a very good Android phone that is also designed for Software development.

Stay away from Rogers, Mobilicity has better Android options IMO
