I'm sure this has been discussed before, but my search-foo is weak.

Never had a smartphone before and figure its time to try one out.

I am looking at the Droid Pro and the Droid X. I have read numerous things about the Droid X poor camera ability (even with the hump :p) and while the massive screen size is tempting, I have to think it may just be too large to be useful as a phone. Sure can't throw it in my back pocket like I can with my old flip phone.

Anyway's, can someone point out the good vs. the bad of each phone?

Phone will NOT be used for texting. Just for phone usage, camera, and web browsing, etc.

Or perhaps should I be looking at a Samsung Droid model?

I am ONLY interested in Motorola and Samsung.

ETA:: I do NOT travel outside the USA.

I thought the same thing about these phones (I have the EVO, but same size) and let me tell you I couldn't have been more wrong. It really isn't too big for a pocket (unless you just have really REALLY small kid sized pockets or something). I have average size hands and don't have issues using the phone at all. The biggest complaint I had about the phone that I was whiing about for weeks was screen size. It is more an attribute than anything for me now! As far as the camera, I think it depends on what you plan to use it for. I have seen some amazing stills taken with these cameras, but video is lacking (iPhone 4 has the edge in US smartphones here IMO). If you plan on taking mostly stills, I think you would be happy with that Droid X.

If you are not a big texter you choice should be between the Droid X and the Samsung Fascinate. You might want to head into a Verizon store so you can see the size comparison first hand and see which one feels better to you.

That is the exact phone I was looking at in the store along with the X and the Pro. I have had excellent luck with both Samsung & Motorola over the years and that is where my quandry lies.

I have ZERO experience with smartphones, so any other advise you folks could give would be greatly appreciated.

If you were a big texter or a long-term Crackberry user then I'd say the keyboard on the Droid Pro was a definite plus.

If you prefer a larger screen and a physical keyboard then the Fascinate is a great choice.

If you don't need the physical keyboard or want to eliminate yet another potential point of failure... or if you just want a hawt phone then I biasedly recommend the Droid X! :D

Take a look in the sub forums for each of the phones. You will see what things people like and don't like. I am personally more of a moto fan. I have a Droid 2 which has the same software as the Droid X but with a smaller screen and a slide out keyboard. I am happy with it.
Things to note about each phone would be the screen size, the DX is 4.3" and the Fascinate is 4". The Fascinate has an amoled screen which eats battery but looks great.
The Droid X has Motoblur and the Fascinate has TouchWiz. These are overlays that are on top of android that the manufactures have put on there. They both have 1 ghz processors and are both very customizable.

The biggest difference I can tell you right now is that the Droid X runs Android 2.2 which supports flash. This update has not been pushed to the Fascinate yet and I don't know when it will. If you watch a lot of online video or wan't a more desktop like browsing experience then you might want to get the DX.

I thought the Droid X ran the 2.1 platform, no?

Also, does the Fascinate require a text package?

Droid X ran Android 2.1 when it was first released. It's now running Android 2.2 (FroYo).

Just thought I'd and my two cents regarding texting. I have never been more efficient on a full keyboard versus a soft keyboard (and know many that can attest to that), so I personally wouldn't go recommending one over the other for that reason (it's a preference thing IMO). Also, I am not aware of any phone that REQUIRES a texting plan. I could be wrong, but generally the requirement is at least a base talk and base data plan.

Yup. Found out that it was being advertised wrong. All you need is a data package.

In any event, I just ordered a Droid X.
