Help animated gifs??

my understanding was that Froyo included support for animated gifs, but i've just upgraded and they're definitely still not working. i've encountered a couple of images with a circle/button overlay that says "GIF" - when i touch this the overlay disappears but the image doesn't animate.
is this just an unfixable quirk of samsung phones?
is anyone else seeing animated gifs with 2.2 on the Mesmerize??
