Any advantage to rooting 2.1, or would that be stepping back?

I currently have a rooted 2.0.1 Droid, and I was wondering if there's any advantage to "upgrading" to 2.1 and then rooting, or would that just get me back to where I started?

    Thanks,
    ~Slacker

No advantage to unroot and reroot.

That's what I thought, but I was just checking. So is there any real way to have "Firmware Version 2.1" while maintaining root access?

Any of the newer bb or nexbeast roms are based off the official 2.1 release aka ese81. They work as well if not better imho.

I'm running Cyanogen 5.0.6.2, and its Firmware Version 2.1-update1

So you could be rooted and have the 2.1 firmware.

If you have root on 2.01, then all you have to do is install a 2.1 rom (I prefer Bugless Beast V 1.0, but many like Cryanogen)...

Gotcha. Works for me, I'm about to install NexBeast v1 and see how I like it (only ROMS I've ever used before were Smoked Glass and Bugless Beast)

Go for it...I think you'll enjoy it! CyanogenMod and Bugless Beast are the best "bases" that you can use IMO. I like what Fab does with BB and I like what JRummy does with CM as far as themes and additional functionality (just FYI in case you want to try a few of the great offerings out there).

I really agree with you about jrummy and fab but the new darktheme over bb v1 is one hot look.

Well I initially had a weird problem: using SPRecovery and changing NexBeastV1.zip to "update.zip" and installing via SPR, my phone became stuck rebooting over and over again. Wiped data/factory reset again, deleted the zip using my computer, and recopied it over to try again. Worked just fine 2nd try, weird that it didn't work the first time.

I really like the looks so far, although I think I will be going back to stock Droid font. The Firmware Version just says "2.1" now rather than the "2.1-update1" like I've seen for others.

Sorry, but why were you still running 2.0.1? Where have you been the past 2 months?
    Haha.

But... You should try flashing clockwork recovery. It's much better. I don't think anyone is going to be doing SPRecovery Nandroids anymore. With clockwork the zip does not have to be renamed "update.zip" and it does not have to be on the root of the sdcard. It's pretty nice. I flash the ROM then the kernel and what ever else one right after the other without having to rename everything.

There's a Default Font fix for NexTheme, or will work on anything I guess. I wasn't to big on the font either.

Easiest way to get clockwork is from the app ROM Manager. But you don't need the app after that. I don't use it, it's not even installed anymore. I just manually flash everything.

Yes, I actually would suggest going into sprecovery then the partitions menu to wipe boot, system, cache, files, manually 2-3 times each so that there are no artifacts from ur previous rom. As for update_1 im not sure.

I've done so many hacks to my phone with 2.0.1 and had previously used custom ROMs, so when 2.1 came out I had no reason to update. The reason I started this thread to begin with was to see if there was even any point in upgrading to 2.1 if I was going to just downgrade it to 2.0.1 again in order to obtain root access. So, I kinda don't get why you're asking why I was still running 2.0.1...

Bleh, it's been several months since I've done anything with my Droid, I've been content with it until recently, so I am completely out of the loop with new methods and whatnot.

Sorry. That was mainly a joke.

But I've seen much better battery life with the ESE53, Still not sure about the ESE81 that's OTA build. The 2.0.1 ROMs basically all have the 2.1 goodies. You probably should update your baseband atleast, that's probably where the improved battery life comes in. I feel the apps meant for 2.1 run much better on 2.1 also. Especially the Gallery.

Again, haven't even so much as been on these forums in months, much less done anything new with my phone, so I'm unfamiliar with which builds are which... I'm now running the NexBeast ROM, before that I just had 2.0.1 rooted

You can't go wrong with NexBeast. Hope you're enjoying the upgrade.
I'm running a hybrid of BuglessBeast and NexBeast.

I'm liking it so far. I'll have to play with it for the next few days to make any real opinions though.

So what's this ESE53 base you speak of, eh? I'm all for getting a little better battery life

Just to clear something up, you cannot upgrade to 2.1 and then root. There is currently no way to root 2.1. In order to achieve root if you have 2.1, you have to revert back to 2.0.1 using an SBF and RSD lite and then root 2.0.1. You would be adding two steps only to wind up right back where you are.

If you want to try a 2.1 ROM, then you are all set up to do so... as others have pointed out. No other work needed, since you are already rooted. Find the one you want, flash it, and be happy. ;)

ESE53 was the OTA before it got delayed and became ESE81. I don't know if its bettery for battery than the newer ESE81, which is the RoM you are running. It just feels like it to me. Bug I'm still running ESE81. Same ROM as you just not as customized.
