Any idea on how to save GPS location for future navigation?

In my Prius's GPS, I can save the location of where the car has been, and use that for future navigation need. In Droid, I don't exactly see a way of saving the current location into something like a contact so I can come back in the future. And there's no street address (inside a vast private property), so that's not going to work either.

I know the phone automatically stores a destination you've already looked up. Next time you start typing the same first letters, it automatically suggests it to you. You just select it then.

I dunno if this is what you wanted to hear. Hope it helps.

It actually stores many destinations you've looked at, not just one.

I noticed you can create a navagation shortcut for quick launch. Might be worth trying.

Download My Maps Editor from Google. I think it has that ability.

Not what I'm looking for. Perhaps this is more of a question of limitation for Google Navigate, but the place I'm trying to save is a cemetery with lots of private road. The road does show up in the google map, but they're unlabled.

I'd like to save a location, and use Google Navigate to get back to it in the future.

You can make and save locations on your pc via my maps in Google maps and then they will be there in your Google Nav on your phone.

Assuming, of course, that you log into Google Maps using the same email address that you use on your phone, right?

From what I've read one way to do this is as suggested above, by using My Maps on Google maps online on your PC, and then accessing the My Maps layer from Google Maps on the Droid.

I took a look at My maps and wasn't able to figure out how to use it exactly, in the limited time I had to play with it.

I was trying to save a location on the Droid the other day, and could not find a way to save it as a contact from the map, or save it as a favorite. There is a LOT of room for improvement i Google Maps/Nav beyond the excellent basics they currently provide.

Use My Maps Editor. It's in the market. You can then use it to mark your location, save it to a layer and pull it up in Google Maps and Google Nav. This is how I create favorites for Google Nav.

Can you provide a quick "here's how" summary...when I looked at My Maps the other day it wasn't clear to me how to do it. I didn't have a lot of time to play with it, but I got a little frustrated...

Also if your using an address you can long press on a screen and use add shortcut and add Directions. Only works if you add address.

Ok, I created a map with the lable on the map in the My Maps. How do I direct the Google Navigate to go there?

    This is what i do

    go to

    Google Maps

on the top left you should see my maps click that and if you dont have one listed create one.

After you create one click edit. You should see (top left inside the map) a place to add points and lines and polygons.

I clicked on add Placemark or what ever and moved it on top of my house.

When your done hit done and or save. Then look at my post above for how to open it from your phone. You might have to have the same account (Google gmail account) for this to work.

    Good luck!!

Thanks. Now, how do I create a shortcut to do this?

Thanks for the tips on My Maps...got it working.

Noticed that once you access one of your maps it is added to the Layers list...that at least reduces the number of clicks required.

The only way to create a shortcut (as in one on the home page) that I have found is to go to the home page, press and hold for the menu and select shortcut and then select navigation as the type. Copy/paste or type in the address and then name it and save.

Works great, but excessively tedious...it would be so simple for the shortcut app to at least allow you to access your contacts, or your google maps saved maps...

Ok, I just managed to do the following:

Create a map in My Map within Google Map on the desktop computer.

Point out the point in this map view, save the view.

Navigate to this map within Google Map, give some start address.

Point A becomes the address you put in. Point B is the coordinate of the point in the map.

Create a contact and copy this coordinate into the address field. I can now navigate to it.

Not anywhere near intuitive, but it does seemed to work.

bigfire's original question was quite specific -- most other nav systems (cars, Garmin, etc.) let you push a single screen button to "save current lat and long" as a named location. Not only is it very convenient, but as bigfire stated, many locations we go to have no address, Like a particular entrance to a mall. Or a place with no building. Or as where I am now in a side road 50 feet off the main drag that the nav system is not smart enough to know is there.

Which brings up the question of does any one know where to ask for features that Google will pay attention to?

Doesn't MyTracks do this much easier? I am at work now so I can not test to find out. No GPS signal.

In the marketplace there's an app called Google map address book that I think will let you do what you want. You can save locations based on address or current lat / long. Then self a saved location to load it in Google maps, touch the marker in Google maps and select navigate.

I've been looking for a way to do this, and I think I may have just figured it out.
With the map displaying your current location, touch and hold the place on the map you want to save. It will look up and display the address. When the address displays, touch it once. Options will appear. You can then save as a contact and name it as you please.
