App files on SD?

I've read that it's possible to save or transfer some (but not all) of the files for an app to the SD card in order to save internal memory, and be able to install more apps

Is this really possible? If so, how is it done?

Is rooting required? (I'd rather not)

As of right now yest rooting is required but it is possible...

Right now you need to root. But hang on a bit and you will be able to do it without rooting shortly.
