Why would removing any of the following system apps cause my market to stop working???

    # rm Stock.*
    rm Stock.*
    # rm Sprint_Nscar.*
    rm Sprint_Nscar.*
    # rm com.htc.TwitterWidget.*
    rm com.htc.TwitterWidget.*
    # rm IM.*
    rm IM.*
    # rm HtcFootprints.*
    rm HtcFootprints.*
    # rm HtcTwitter.*
    rm HtcTwitter.*
    # rm amazonmp3.*
    rm amazonmp3.*
    # rm HtcFootprintsWidget.*
    rm HtcFootprintsWidget.*
    # rm Sprint_Navigator.*
    rm Sprint_Navigator.*

This is a pain in the ass, because pretty much every time I remove anything I have to NANDroid reboot my phone to get some functionality back. I keep removing less and less and still face the same problem. Has anyone removed things and maintained full functionality?

I've noticed that also when I use a startup manager, sometimes disabling certain apps will keep the market from working. I haven't troubleshot this down to specifics yet, though if anyone has, I'd appreciate any insight to save me some time...

    Be careful with this one:

    rm IM*

There's an app called ImProvider that seems to have something to do with market download functionality - really, that command shouldn't remove it as the command should be case-sensitive, however you might want to make sure you still have the ImProvider package in place. Outside of that, I've removed all the same apps with no problem.

Also, no need to post an 'edit' reply - your message will show it's last edited status ;)

Be careful removing startup programs? I do and when I prevent google talk from running at startup I can't get to the market. Once I launch google talk I have the market again.

Yeah it's definitely the IM.*; thats not the stock IM app, its something used internally.

No no, I meant, specifically, be careful with the command ' rm IM* ', as it could be inadvertently removing the ImProvider app. It's perfectly safe to remove both IM.apk (and .odex) as well as IMPlugins.apk, but not ImProvider.

ImProvider should also be allowed to run at start, perhaps it's just not enabled in your startup manager?

    [edit]
Eh, I misread your command, rm IM.* should be just fine. - the dot be all the difference.

    [edit 2]
Actually IM.apk / .odex should be the Instant messenger app as far as I know. At the very least, that's what disappeared from my app list when I removed it ;)

Yeah I think this may be the culprit. The funny thing is, I didn't even consider this because it seemed so unlikely to make sense. I guess that's why you have to troubleshoot one at a time, but it really is a huge time suck.

Would you mind posting what you successfully removed while maintaining a stable machine? Doesn't need to be exact, but maybe whatever you remember off the top of you head? I'm trying to gather as much info on this as possible and will post my conclusions when I'm done.

Quite literally, everything you removed except for Navigator and Amazon MP3. I also removed Sprint TV. I don't believe I've removed anything else outside of that.
