Techtree.com India > News > Consumer Electronics > AMOLED outdoes iPhone 4 Retina Display: Samsung
Personally I dont buy into this higher resolution and Im pretty sure the difference for the resolution is barely noticeable.
If indeed the retina display on the iPhone 4 is better then thumbs up to them but it would only take Samsung a short time to make a new display technology that can roflstomp the retina display.. Apple is stepping into dangerous waters here with Samsung.
Hehe i love how Apple says that its better than Amoled...
first of all the average iphone user has no idea what all this IPS/AMOLED is they just need to see both phones side by side and judge what looks better..
and i guarantee 90% will say the Samsung display looks better...
there you go instant WIN for Samsung...
I do have to say though that Apple wins with the build quality..
glass front and back with stainless steel.. very hot... everything else not
Steve Jobs even said that the iPhone 4 IPS screen will be the reference for years to come and he didn't think anyone would come even close. I have to say that it's downright laughable that no one would come close in years, seeing how nothing right now indicates that they are actually ahead, let alone far ahead.
I do agree that they made a nice choice with their build quality though, even though there's some reservation for that the by far most common thing to break on the 3GS was the glass, which is now all over the phone. Plastic won't feel as nice, even though I will enjoy the SGS being lighter.
IPS is meant to have direct sunlight legibility roughly equal to regular, not Super, AMOLED screens, so advantage the Galaxy there too...
The iPhone4 wont be a reference or the best display panel for long, i wager before the end of the year something else significantly better than than and probably another revision of samsung's Super AMOLED will be out.
i'm not trying to argue but i think most people agree that Super AMOLED is better (i think ) wait... sorry... ur saying apple's retina display is better right?? i don't wanna get this wrong....
sorry earlz... i'm confused now after reading the article LOL
Samsung (one of the leading LCD screen manufacturer) vs Apple (asks Samsung to make an LCD for their stuff). Hmmm.........the battle has already been decided.
iphone definately hasnt got the best display the article says that...
I think this pretty much sums up all of the specs of iphone 4. Nothing shown makes me think the new iphone is revolutionary or 'new'. The retina display just looks like a well done IPS LCD with high resolution. Super AMOLED is still better, until I see 'real' pictures that prove otherwise. That's really the only thing new that they put out. The rest of the hardware specs are just catching up with the latest Android phones. So in my opinion, the tables have turned, Apple is now trying to catch up with Android (Once Froyo lands, you might be able to say the same thing about software as well).
GO ANDROID!!! and Galaxy S!!!
This is just more proof that Samsung's major goal is surpassing Apple to get that number 2 spot behind Nokia worldwide. Apple comes out with this new type of display.... Samsung outdoes that by coming out with Super AMOLED.
You can't really blame Steve Jobs for trying to fight the battle though. It's his company and to be honest, as a consumer, people should expect nothing less. Do we really expect him to come out and say, "Well crap, looks like Samsung beat us this time."
The only people that might believe the new iPhone's screen is the best are the blind fanboys that only buy Apple because it's a fad. Smart consumers will do some research.
wait i thought Samsung was #2 worldwide?? Motorola and Samsung was going back and forth between #2 and 3 spot??
That's pretty much the reason he says what he says. Jobs is well aware that the majority of iphone users are the average consumer who see the iphone and label it the jesus phone. They just assume its the best thing ever because its the 'iphone'.
A good example is a friend of mine who gets the new one every year. He starts talking about how the iphone 4 is going to do 720p and video calls and that it makes it the best phone ever. I'm like, well the EVO already does that, so does the Galaxy S and there are numerous phones outside the US that have been doing that. He just says, "Oh". Of course, he is still getting the iphone. I don't bother trying to explain how limited their video calls are, as well as their multi tasking. Most Apple fanbois are too blindly loyal.
Samsung is #2 worldwide for mobile phones. Maybe he meant smart phones specifically?
they are, apple is way down.
i agree hanano17 i think Apple/Steve Jobs brain wash all these iphone users... right??
and that's what i thought about samsung being #2!!! so then what is he referring to then?? because i know nokia can't be #1 in smartphones... well maybe??? i was never a fan of nokia for some reason even though they make really good phones....
First of all, you have to look at it from perspective of phones that cost $500+. Apple never plays in the low end of the market with razor thin margins much like Ferrari doesn't either.
Second, I plan to purchase BOTH phones as I usually have at least 3 phones I switch between depending on my mood. If the Galaxy S could have an IPS display with such a high resolution density, I wish it could get it over SuperAmoled. The only thing great aout super amo is the black levels and the power consumption. IPS displays win on outdoor visibility. Viewing angles and contrast ratios will be nearly the same. AMOLED loses on color cast and color accuracy. Sure the saturated look some people like but it's not always desirable.
If Samsung could make a Super AMOLED at the capacity that Apple needs and at the resolution Apple needs, I'm sure they would have used it. Simple fact is, its hard to scale up Super AMOLED production at the resolution density that Apple wants.
I'm pretty sure Samsung could up the resolution if they wanted, they just don't want to because it will cut into power consumption. The average consumer won''t notice the difference in resolution between the two displays, at least in terms of sharpness. Just like the average consumer thinks the iphone is outright the better phone/product just because its the iphone.
Also, I read an article that said Samsung declined to make displays for Apple, so they went another route. Pretty sure Samsung can keep up with anything Apple wanted and surpass it, as their Super AMOLED surpasses ISP LCDs, and will continue to do so as they pour more R&D into it.
On a final note, Apple's products are solid and the new iphone will probably be solid too. I'm not hating on Apple, i'm just not going to blindly follow what they say and claim the iphone is the best thing out there and other products are years away from being on par. The new iphone and the higher end Android phones are on par right NOW, and at the rate that they progress and get released, Android phones will surpass the new iphone. All Apple did was put itself on even playing field with its hardware revisions.
Well, to be fair. The PPI is still very high on the Galaxy S. I mean it's a 4" screen. Imagine keeping that same pixel density on a bigger screen. You'd fast be approaching 4k Resolution on a 20" screen. Which is twice the res of 1080p.
800x480 is a fine resolution for a 4" screen. Hell, it's fine for a 5" screen.
They're having massive problems keeping even HTC supplied with regular AMOLED screens. They can't possibly hope to ramp up production to what Apple wants in the timeframe they're looking for.
Do you have a some more info on the outdoor visibility claim? IPS vs Super AMOLED
Samsung might be having trouble meeting screen production commitments for other customers because they are focusing on producing displays for their own products. i.e. Wave and a 110 country release of the Galaxy S.
I thought I read that Apple wanted to use a Samsung AMOLED screen on the IP4 but Samsung couldn't meet the commitment due to the above. Samsung obviously wants to make a big play for a piece of the smartphone market, and supplying their own phones first probably fits in with that plan.
Yes, Super AMOLED screens are 20% better than AMOLED for outdoor use which is still far worse than a good IPS display in outdoor use.
I meant, do you have a link to a comparison video or review? In other words, what are you basing this claim on? (not saying you are wrong or right, just asking...)
According to a post on Engadget: Samsung: iPhone 4's retina display is nice, but it's no AMOLED -- Engadget
Moreover, Samsung believes its screens offer better viewing angles and contrast, and concludes by saying that "structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AM-OLED display technology."
I'm not exactly sure how you know that the IP4 screen is better than the SGS unless you seen them compared or have personal experience with both. Thanks.

The iPad uses a IPS display yeah it looks great outdoors in the sun....
