Hey there, i'm new to this forum as i'm getting a Desire next week :)

Anyone have any idea how many apps you can install on the internal memory without 'rooting' it?

I'll probably install a lot of apps when i get mine next wednesday (i already have made a list of over 30!) and i would really like to avoid rooting it as it will probably void the warranty and i'm not sure i could do it anyway - even after reading the step by step guide a few times over.

So yeah, how many apps have you all managed to fit in before getting the memory low message that some have reported?

    Thanks, Adam.

it's a contant battle and something that i cant wait to get fixed with 2.2.

I currently have around the region of 60 apps of various sizes, i constantly seem to float around the 20mb available on internal storage.

I guess the point i'm trying to make is that it's not the quantity, but the size of the apps themselves that matters... i previously used my iPod touch and never even considered the amount of space being used but now i'm constantly checking the sizes in the market and uninstalling less used apps.

    Hope this helps!

A Desire starts off with about 140Mb (or around there, depends on network customisation I think) of free memory to install apps in. Apps vary from a few KB to tens of MB. I would guess they average out at about 1MB each, so you ought to be good for 100 - 140 Apps.

As has been said, it's not a number but the the size of the apps that matter. Right now, most apps aren't too big, but it's only a matter of time (and of Google getting Apps2SD on all handsets) before developers start working on bigger apps, especially games.

Sorry - no idea. I am on T-Mobile. I had a Vodafone HTC Magic for a few months and that seemed to have very little Vodafone stuff at all.

It will depend hugely on the app. Google Earth uses 22Mb. Asphalt 5 uses 11MB internal. Navigon uses 19MB. iGo uses 11MB. CoPilot uses 7MB. HTC Keyboard is 5MB. Swype is 3MB. AndNav2 is 6MB. Google Maps is 5MB, Any of the soundboards will use up to 6MB.

Then of course there are loads of other apps that will only use 200-300KB.

Realistically you won't be running all of those navigation apps though :D

I didn't think I had that many apps on mine, and use the SD card for everything else non-app, but had a notification yesterday that I was running low on phone storage. Definitely need to sort this in 2.2.

No-one except Google really knows the answer to this. Google have been working on it for ever, and I saw something the other day that hinted that someone had let the cat out of the bag and that it was in 2.2, but that could also have been read that it might be in the next update.

Until we see 2.2, we don't know. We are hoping.

I'm not 100% sure to be honest. This was the one thing you could see easily on a Windows Mobile  device ('scuse the language).

I'm thinking maybe there's some kind of startup diagnostic thing you can do that'll tell you, or maybe an app that does it. Although it's likely to eat battery if it's going to constantly run in the background scanning your RAM.

The internal phone storage is the RAM for the Desire.

Advanced Task Killer will tell you how much RAM is available.

Don't get RAM confused with the internal memory ;)

OK I have the N1, which is mostly the same as the Desire except for Sense and trackpad. What I gathered is that I have 512mb RAM; 196mb of that is partition as internal memory...thus RAM is internal memory :/

Ah yes, thought you were suggesting the RAM and internal memory were one and the same, but they are partitioned like you say.

In the case of Desire/N1 yes...but phones like the Incredible, then internal memory and RAM are 2 different things :D.

I just wanted to point out to CorrupSanity that StevenSeed was correct, lol.

But man...I'm complaining about the internal memory for the N1 with only 196mb...as I only have 36mb left...but140mb...ouch...I don't understand why it's less than the N1...I'm thinking it's because of the carrier's bloat-wares  No wonder for most Desire users, App2SD is on the of their list for what they want from Froyo.
