I have had my Eris for a few weeks and have come across one really annoying problem...evertime I reboot the phone several of my third party apps rename themselves and the icon mutates into something else. The only way to fix is to uninstall/reinstall, but as soon as I reboot it does it all over again. The apps I have problems with:

    Google Sky Map
    Where
    Layar
    My Coupons
    TasKiller

I have searched the forums and apparently Hero users have had the same issues, which were apparently fixed after a recent HTC update. I called HTC and they're trying to blame it on the apps, but as best I can tell it's related to some kind of corruption of certain directories. I don't understand all the technical jargon I read on the Hero problem but it seems this is an HTC issue. HTC basically told me have Verizon factory reset the phone, and if that doesn't work then call back. Apparently I am the VERY FIRST person to contact them on this issue, per the tech support guy. Anybody else having problems? If so, any easy fix?

*If you are having problems, please call HTC so they know this is a not a isolated thing! The number is 866-449-8358.

everyone has these issues with these apps. i have with where, goog sky, and coupons myself.

uninstall the app, remove the icon on your homescreen, reinstall the app, readd the icon.....should clear it up

    i would NOT do a hard reset...craziness

I have this same problem. The Where icon will randomly disappear completely, and only reinstalling (or sometimes updating) will return it. But it's happened numerous times now.

My ChompSMS icon also changes to say 'com.p1.cho..'.

Is there a way to get 'under the hood' a bit and rename the icons on the desktop? Some of them are just too long to fit. Doesn't make sense. Not a clean interface design like that 'other' platform...

I will definitely stay away from doing a reset...it's not worth the hassle and I know it won't fix the problem. It's just irritating because I also have a "girly" app that also gets messed up. It saves information that would be hard to replace after an uninstall/reinstall. If it is really is an issue with the Eris, I wish they would just fix the problem like they did with the Hero. So FRUSTRATING!!! If other people have the same problem, then maybe they can let HTC know so they can work on an update.

    Hi,
I'm one of the developers of Google Sky Map. I am quite certain that the HTC representative you spoke to is mistaken and this is due to a problem with the HTC Hero and not the apps.

The Hero includes an HTC-modified version of Android that has (or had) a bug in the way it stored application metadata (ie data about the app such as its icon, name etc). Amongst other things, when an application was updated, the metadata would revert to the previous version following a phone reboot. Not only did this cause the cosmetic issues you've noticed, but if an app made a major update (so that it was no longer compatible with its old metadata) then it would not run at all. A few weeks ago HTC pushed out an OTA update that at least partially fixed this. If the problem is still present then contacting HTC and insisting that the representative log the issue as a bug is most likely to draw their attention to it and get it fixed. As a developer I tend to prioritize bugs by the numbers of users reporting the same issue, and I bet they do the same. Note that I'm offering this advice as a developer, not as a representative of Google.

Hope that you get a good result soon (and thanks for using Sky Map!)

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully all will stay well...I knew was a problem with the phone and not the apps. I love Sky Map, and it makes a great impression whenever I show it off to someone!
