Lately I've been noticing that some apps are running in the background when I've not opened them. Footprints, Voice dialer, Messages (I use handcent), Peep and Music are the ones I've noticed and (coincidentally) are all apps I don't use. I only notice them when using Advanced Task Killer and have to kill them.

It's a new issue so is it possible another app I downloaded recently is to blame? Am i maybe just insane?

To my knowledge, it's just the nature of the operating system. You can manually end those processes, but without root access cannot prevent them from starting up when the phone boots up. Although it's a contentious subject around here, you can use a task killer, or one of the more advanced task managers that will auto kill some of those applications.

Ah but see that's the thing, I haven't restarted the phone.

Those apps are like your explorer.exe, even if you kill them they keep coming back. So the only way to kill them for good is to root and remove!

I vaguely remember explorer.exe as being a windows thing..

Thanks for the tip. Why would they just now be doing this though? I've had the phone for several weeks now and I haven't noticed it before.

These programs I believe are embedded in the software, and will continue to run no matter what. You can kill those processes, but they startup almost immediately. Some would argue that the taks managers/killers do more harm that good for your phone. The OS (Linux based) is reputed to be able to manage resources well enough on its own.

Hmm. Thanks :) I'll take that into consideration. Honestly I use the task killer more to appease my compulsive need to keep things tidy. :) I'm certainly not technically minded (see above reference to explorer.exe which turned my brain to apple cinnamon flavored oatmeal).
