Hello drb.

Always try the free version of an app first, if both free and paid are offered.

Most are fine. Read the dev's spiel for each app, along with the reviews (which often mention the device the app was tested on).

The only restrictions that you have to watch out for have to do with apps which require a rooted device to function.

Some apps not compatible with certain devices will not even show up in the Play Store if accessed by that particular device. But they have not got that down to a pure science yet.

Any app from Google Play store works pretty good on my GN2. so far no problems

Another thing, have an idea of what you want/need, research and read the user comments, try as many apps and then make your decision. I have 5 pdf annotation applications and only one...
