I got an unlimited data plan and I have no tether block.
Ive used over 50gb in a month lol
3 network seem really chilled
3UK are good, and probably the cheapest too.
But there again data is cheap across the board in the UK, with far fewer examples of restrictions on tethering and other price-gouging tactics that seem to be the norm in some other parts of the world.
I don't have a contract with 3. I use PAYG and buy cheap "add on" packages that last a month if I want unlimited data for (say) tethering while away from home or even cheaper limited data packages, but even if I just let it run on phone credit the most it charges is 1p a MB which is hardly going to break the bank for occasional use.
Hopefully 3 dont get greedy and just stay happy with a good steady income
*You probably can't tether for free since your friend is using a grandfathered unlimited data plan. He would need to switch to a tiered shared data plan. Mine is 10GB/month.
"Proof"? What, my word isn't good enough, lol?
"What's included in AT&T Mobile Share℠ plans?
AT&T offers two different Mobile Share plans: Mobile Share with Unlimited Talk and Text and Mobile Share - Data. All Mobile Share plans include mobile hotspot and tethering capability on applicable devices.
Mobile Share with Unlimited Talk and Text includes your choice of data packages to share with all the devices on your account, plus unlimited domestic talk, text, and picture messaging for your phones."

giffgaff is a virtual network that "piggy-backs" the o2/telefonica network but their data is far cheaper than o2's and theyre obviously making a profit.
Im hoping theyll maintain their 3g network when 4g rolls out
For comparison, that would cost $375 on AT&T.
MVNOs don't have to pay for building/maintaining the network infrastructure, let alone all the engineers and system support staff that it takes to keep it running.

Is that truly unlimited or "unlimited*"
* subject to fair usage policy and/or throttling after a certain amount of data is used, e.g. 2GB per month or billing cycle.
Yeah i used to be with GiffGaff and their "unlimited" data actually is limited to around 20gb plus theyre really strict about tethering.
On 3 i use the pre-pay
By default, I've noticed Android does use more data compared to iOS but it's just in the order of 50-100MB (no web surfing or downloads, just background syncing stuff, granted this was back in the days of iOS 4). In the case of the survey, I reckon it's just a matter of Android smartphones appealing to heavy mobile data users. The iPhone has become ubiquitous enough that it's now used by a lot of non-techies. Heck, even my dad has one and I think he uses at most 100MB mobile data per month.I think this story is full of bull crap...

Is that still with Globe Postpaid? How's the speed? Used a Nexus 7 (2013) with Smart Prepaid (LTE 995) as wi-fi hotspot and there was actually one day we used over 10GB due to tethering.
