Title says it all.I went out looking for items today, but i ended up emptyhanded at the end.

What will you guys be going with? I personally am still on the fence as far as a concrete decision.
At first i wanted a case, but then i thought about extra size. I am also very careful with my devices so now im confused. do i even neeed the extra size?

I want to go with the invisible shield but last time i had one, i noticed it makes the screen a little less vibrant. I know there are plenty of choices on this as well. Even still, i have yet to find anything as strong as the invishield....or that doesnt reduce the touchscreen's sensitivity.

does anybody have a setup in mind already? What are your opinions? My main concern is protecting the screen but would also like a full body armor to preserve resale value.

    Opinions?

after dropping my Eris and cracking the screens, I will be adding some sort of shock absorption to this baby.

I like Ghost Armor. It doesn't have an orange peel texture like Invisible Shield. It also reduces finger prints by 90%.

I had an Otterbox case for my iPhones before switching. The case was great, but what I am noticing is they (the company) do not seem to be in the loop with the handset manufacturers and cannot get the products out in a very timely manor. It will take many months for them to get a Droid X case out (maybe Christmas). The DInc case is said to be released soon, but that means in a couple of months to Otterbox. They are the best though.

Yeah, it took a long time for the Storm case too. But I dropped the Storm several times and it survived without a problem. So, I do like the cases. I'll just have to get something else to use for a while until they finish making a case for the X.

i agree. i like having the thinnest profile possible.

I was looking at the ghost armor site and it looks like a great product, unfortunately they dont have a full body for the X.

My friend had a storm, i thought that thing was built like a tank.

I think im going with the ghost armor, so thank you AJ_evo

+1 for Otter Box. I've used their "Defender" case for both my previous Blackberrys. They are as close to indestructible as you can get, and they give the phone substantial shock protection. It took them about two months to get the Defender case out for the Tour. They don't seem to be in the loop for advance data on the phones.

Disclaimer: Before I start, I want to let everyone know that I have never owned a smartphone, any of these screen protectors or any of these cases. That said, I have been researching this stuff obsessively since I first heard about the Motorola Droid last year (I'm serious about the obsessive researching).

    Screen protectors:

I've done waaaay to much research on the whole screen protector subject b/c I thought I was going to get the Incredible. Anyway a very brief summary is in the last paragraph of my post here: http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-x/110677-screen-protectors-gorilla-glass.html#post1040420

One thing I didn't address was glare and smudging: the screen already has glare and is prone to smudging. You won't find a screen protector that completely gets rid of the glare or smudging without sacrificing clarity. This makes sense if you think about: the light is obviously being refracted or diffracted (which of those is right word physics people?) by these screen protectors, instead of being reflected by the screen. Well guess what, it does the same thing to the light beneath the screen protector it too (the screen). If you can live with that (and some people can), then go ahead and look at the anti-smudge and anti-glare protectors. Otherwise, accept that the crystal clear types may reduce glare a teeny bit and they won't mess with clarity if you apply them correctly. They also make smudging easier to clean.

Just a little warning (please don't yell at me for this) but ZAGG Invisible Shields seem to get the most complaints of any protectors. They seem to be thicker and may offer more protection but apparently they also are sticky and hard to drag your fingers across. Additionally, they tend to have the orange peel effect and there are a few other issues I'm forgetting currently. Your experience may vary obviously. They also are relatively expensive. I personally have a sneaking suspicion that this company has focused more on grabbing agreements with retailers and employed the "show high prices to imply quality" marketing strategy (you'll notice there are FAR more coupons for this brand floating around than any other brand).

    Verizon cases:

As far as cases go, if you are an early adopter and need a case right away, I think the hard silicone cases are the overall best pick. They aren't to soft and rubbery, yet they provide quite a bit of impact protection. They are also quite thin. They don't cover much of the front of the screen but they do rise above the screen: this will provide some screen protection if the phone is dropped face down b/c the case should hit first instead of the screen. The only real complaint I heard from the Incredible forums was that it would sometimes mess with a screen protector and make the edges peel up: this issue wasn't reported very often.

The verizon case with the kickstand is also very appealing given the large screen on the Droid X: you may wanna just set it up and watch some stuff (I know I do). I may be wrong but I think that case is leather. Given that is has room to store a kickstand, it will most likely be thicker than the hard silicone case. I'm not sure but I believe that this case is made of leather: not sure how that will rate up in terms of impact protection.

The holster/shell combo cases are pretty sweet b/c they don't have a clip in and are easy to get off your hip quickly. They look good and seem to fit very well (this doesn't mean the other cases don't fit equally well). The shell parts are extremely thin, hard plastic, so they won't provide as much impact protection as the hard silicone cases. Also you should consider that the they don't cover as much as the hard silicone cases: that may be good or bad depending on who you are. I'm not certain about this, but I don't think they rise above the screen on the front, so if you drop it face down, it will likely impact on the screen itself and not the shell. One more thing that I can't confirm, but have read in the other forums: apparently it's relatively easy for the phone to fly out of the holster accidentally b/c there is no clip (a few people accused those reporting the problem of putting the phone into the holster upside down... there was no response).

Non-verizon cases: (these are for later adopters or people committed to wait for third party cases)

The Seidio Innocase II seems to be a hot pick for people for a few reasons. 1st, it apparently provides wonderful impact protection in a very thin case (perhaps not quite as thin as the hard silicone case from vzw... don't quote me on that). 2nd, it has a seam in the middle that allows you to pull the phone out of it more quickly and painlessly than most other cases that are a single piece. They look and feel good in the hand. They seem to be the quickest, high quality after market case to hit the market after phone release (this was the case with the HTC Incredible at least). These cases tend to be more pricey than the verizon cases.

The Otterbox cases are also an extremely popular and well know for the mind blowing protection that they provide. I believe some of the styles come with some sort of screen protector as an added bonus. The quality of these cases is about the highest you will find, hands down: the prices certainly reflect the build quality (aka they're high). I hear a lot of people saying that these cases are somewhat thick: I won't comment on this myself b/c I'm not familiar with all the different models, but I will say that many of the Otterbox cases have multiple layers which would seem to support those claims. These cases are also notoriously slow to make it to the market after phone release. You will have to be a later adopter or just truly committed to holding out for one of these if you do adopt early.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask questions.

Thanks for the insight on your findings, it is very much appreciated as launch approaches. I am sure many members will find that useful.

hmmm btw, 2 days ago I sent an email to Ghost armor, through their website. I am interested in a full body skin from them.......still no answer. Hopefully they're in the lab cooking something up. YOU KNOW WHAT? I am going to link them here.....:). hopefully that paints a clearer picture.

Ghost Armor. It's perfectly smooth, it doesn't have an orange peel texture like Invisible Shield. I love shields on the screen because they reduce fingerprints/smudges by about 85%. IMO that is reason alone to use one, but that's just my personal preference. I'd rather spend time enjoying my screen than cleaning fingerprints off it.

It took me some time to find the case I wanted for my BB curve. Love my Glove cover. Can use it as a clip, as a flat base or use as an adjustable kick stand. Also use as a partial clip as a little grip to hold onto when emailing/texting.

Will like to have a glove cover for the Droid X I will pobably be getting.

Will have to check out the kick stand case on verizon. Thought it just had the flat base option.

I really like hard silicone cases, they are thin, absorb impact, and have a nice snug fit.

gorilla glass + diminished image = no screen protector for me.

case? for sure. leather + kickstand is awfully appealing. have to see how much bulk it adds to this already ginormous phone. maybe silicone?

I wanna touch on a few things here. 1st, I think a lot of people are gonna be surprised at how regular-sized this phone feels when you don't have it sitting next to another phone. The 3.7 inch screens really do feel smallish in my hands, and I don't have big hands (at least I don't think I do).

I also wanna discuss the Gorilla Glass and the perception that it won't scratch. This is outright false. You can't scratch it with keys b/c of Mohs scale of mineral hardness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Glass is naturally pretty hard, so there aren't a ton of everyday materials that will scratch it. Unfortunately, the dirt that sometimes shows up in your pockets very may well have bits and pieces of materials that are harder than glass. Guess what that means: scratches. Don't believe me? Here are some discussions about scratched glass from the Droid forum:

People scratched their Droids --> http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/45812-has-anyone-scratched-their-gorilla-glass.html and http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/20803-scratched.html

People hoped they could fix their scratched screens and realized they couldn't and would have to deal with a blemished $600 piece of equipment --> http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/36397-there-any-magical-way-remove-screen-scratches.html

The Droid X can be scratched, even if it isn't easy to do. Inevitably it will happen to someone who thinks they're the most careful person in the world with their electronics. Also, a lot of people assume that screen protectors decrease touch sensitivity and decrease clarity. I don't have time to find all the posts from various forums saying that they noticed no difference what-so-ever. However, if you don't apply the protectors correctly or you choose crappy screen protectors, you may experience such issues.

If you think the risk is worth the "reward" then you can disregard what I've said. The reason I put reward in quotations is b/c like I said previously, the right screen protector will make you think you're using a naked screen.

It kinda sounds like I'm selling something here, and I'm really not. There are probably way more Droid users that use a naked screen and haven't encountered problems than those who have scratched it: I have at least 3 friends in that category myself.

I hope this is helpful to some people.

Thanks for your thoroughly researched info. The Innocase II Surface looks like the best option and they have a kickstand on the DINC model, so I hope that goes for the X as well. Only 1mm thick too. That's a much better option then those crappy clam shells that pop open when you drop them.

<P>I'm with you. Seidio has worked well for me in the past. Although, I have to admit, I purchased the Verizon shell/holster combo for my Droid and it was actually pretty good. Good enough that I never went out and replaced it with the Innocase. I wouldn't get the shell/holster combo over the Seidio case though; I just need to have a case asap and the Verizon one was a good alternative for me.</P>
