I have 20 sec mp3's that I can assign to individual contacts for their ringtone. I also have 07 sec mp3's that I want to assign to their notification sound such as incoming texts. How can I do that? Do I need a 3rd party app??

You have to access the sounds setting through each app or program. (I have an LG Ally, so forgive me if things are a little different, but it should be similar.) For instance, go into "Messages", (it should show all your threads), then hit "Menu", "Settings", scroll down to "Notifications" or "Select Ringtone", and select whatever you want. I hope that helps.

Handcent (available in the Market for free) allows you to assign individual contacts their own ringtones. Handcent also has many other cool features. ChompSMS may also allow this, it's been a long time since I tried ChompSMS.
