Automatic login to voice mail

I recently returned my phone to factory settings and re-installed my apps in order to speed it back up (successful!). Previously I had set voice mail to automatically enter my password (*86,xxxx#) and that is one of the numbers under voice mail. But when I click on the voice mail icon on the notification bar, I keep getting the default number (just *86).

I know it worked before, but I can't remember exactly how I had it set (I did it over a year ago). Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Can you call your own number from your phone to access the voicemail settings?
I know on my phone, the Evo4g, I have to call my own number and go thru the prompts to change the settings as far as auto enter password, etc.
What device/carrier do you have?
