Help Back up SMS to SD card or PC on HTC Hero that does not have active service

I have a Sprint HTC Hero with Android. I need to get 1000s of texts / SMS off that phone and into an Excel spreadsheet or CSV file. The problem is that the phone is not activated as I have switched phones and even carriers. Is there some way to save the whole SMS database to the SD card or my laptop without having to install an app? I installed HTC sync from the phone's mini SD card but had difficulties getting my phone to connect and even then couldn't find an option for backing up SMS - only calendars, etc. Thank you!

What's stopping you from installing apps via wifi?

The problem is that the phone is not activated

Use of the word "activated" suggests this is a CDMA device, in which case your question would be better asked in the Sprint Hero forum.
