I leave "background data" off in settings>data sync>google to save on battery. But, Market requires it to be enabled.

I've been looking for a widget that would turn it on/off like the other widgets for wifi, APN, etc. The GTWidget Sync app looks to fit the bill, but I can't find it in the market. Anybody have the app?

Sync Settings would also seem to do this, but I can't find that one either!

Just because i'm curious, about how much battery do you think you are saving?

    If you don't actually know...

I would try and enable it, but make sure your programs aren't syncing every half hour or what not make it something longer like 2-4 hours. Monitor your battery savings at that point and report back.

Its really two levels of transfer. Background data grabs stuff for applications that need info from internet; facebook and the like. Auto-syncing i would imagine has more to do with gmail and contacts and such.

All you can do is try. If it eats your battery much faster then we know whats going on. If not, then its not worth the hassle of having to switch it.

I found it listed in many posts as a way to conserve.
Although you can't believe everything you read, there's got to be some truth to it.

Are you able to download those apps?

Sync SEttings is a copy protected app... so it probably means your phone's fingerprint is either not recognised by Android Market or you have a unlocked phone which isn't allowed to see copy protected apps.
