It happened yesterday, I was too pissed off about it to post last night but I'm coming to terms with it.

My usb port has started to act strange, sometimes it will connect, sometimes not so much, it still charges fine, but usb data transfer is on its way out. This is exactly how it started with Motorheads Avail, and I can only assume eventual worst for my phone. A tragedy for sure but life will go on.

I have switched to wireless adb and data sync but it is so slow that it is barely even a viable option. This phone is my daily driver, buying a new one is not in the budget right now, and I'm not about to count on donations, so I'm going to have to cut development back a lot, though I should have a full "install from zip" version of SF2.0 before too long. Fear not, Ill still be around, but its gonna be slow going from here.

Yep, sporatic connection was the first symptom to my Avail's demise... It sucks to hear that James.

Im not sure yet if I will buy another one either...

The samsung galaxy s2 is out now on straight talk, very tempting...

I'll be buying one when I have the funds, purely for the purpose of development.

Curious, can you use any AT&T phone with a net10 SIM? This would broaden the variety of android phones for users of that service, like me, since all we have so far is the Merit. Using one.three which is AT&T based seems to suggest yes, assuming that you can still get by with swapping SIMs between devices like you used to years ago. If not, this would present a problem if net10 support doesn't allow a non-net10 phone IMEI on their network...

It sucks ... avail, merit, roamer phones are
dead ... And the way I had planned to
transport this deadness of the phone. Guys
I'm sorry your phone, I hope you will not
go wrong again and take this mess.

Im on straight talk, but the concept is the same, if I bought a net 10 merit, rooted it and unlocked it, I could put my straight talk sim in it and it would run my roms and load my patches, same as if I bought an at&t avail, although that is typically a contract type phone.

...But because Im on straight talk, I can stick my sim into any carrier unlocked android and it will work fine, as long as I keep paying straight talk for service.

What about swapping sims in a non unlocked phone? Long ago when AT&T was called Cingular wireless you could easily swap phones by swapping SIM cards, no need to transfer your account from one phone to another. Made upgrading a snap. Since the android powered merits lack the tracfone proprietary software I am wondering if I could buy up say a galaxy s and pop my sim in and go, maybe id get better hardware? My concern is if net10 would allow it. They all use AT&T for cellular the issue is whether the old Cingular exploit sim swap still works today.

bummer dude. I googled black friday merit deals a couple days ago, and saw a bunch for $30-50 bucks. might be worth checking out for you guys.

I got mine for 50 bucks too, but that was when they first showed up here, first week they sold for 50

I'm a mechanic so my little Merit is put through hell but unlike my Optimus V before it, not a scratch, for net10 quality, that is mighty impressive. I hacked and modified a stock rooted ROM to imitate CyanogenMod too and something I did (and couldn't recreate if I wanted to do it again ) fixed that phantom booting issue. Using my cellular data 24/7 in 2G only not one hiccup.

Also disabled the low disk space notification, can provide instructions to anyone interested.

Yo James, if your merit kicks the bucket do ya think you could unscrew the back inside panel and get some pics?

if this baby kicks the bucket I will do exactly that, and then I will buy a new one, and then I will combine the two into one monster with two batterys, two speakers (surround sound baby!) and two cpus if I can manage that.

I have the ZTE merit and can't stand the thing, LOL have hinted to my hubs that I want the galaxy s2 for christmas. I don't see how you guys can do all that on these phones with the little to no internal memory. For me just running facebook causes that dang low disk space notification, and I was able to (finally) figure out how to make phone save to sd card instead of phone, even then with all the stock apps it takes up half my space. I give props to you all for being able to do so much tweaking to these phones....I am jealous lol. But may soon have an extra merit laying around haha.

We rooted it & deleted the junk. I don't facebook so I have no idea about that. The script James used in SF writes data to the SD so you can have a 2gb internal.

yeah i used these intrstructions to get phone to save to sd card
How to Install Android Apps to the SD Card by Default & Move Almost Any App to the SD Card - How-To Geek

but it still puts some on phone then i have to move...so it can be hard for me to download the apps in the first place.

rooting is not an option for me instead of rooting i'd mess up and make my phone rotten instead lol.

now deciding between google nexus 4 and the galaxy s2 st offers. I like the sd card because i can use adapter to computer to transfer over pics etc....have had too many phones lock up and loose pics...plus since its a ST phone it would just be plug and go, but...Nexus uses newer OS.

I hate the ZTE keyboards, not sure if it is the OS or the touchscreen response but...i end up with too many typos.

You can get different keyboards. I use Touchpal.
