Basic questions about HTC Desire

Does google maps always need an internet connection to work ? I naively thought that if was was pre-loaded onto the phone then I could navigate around the map without needing a data connection.

I have tried browsing the internet on my Desire using Wifi in my home but when I went to my mum's house and the device accessed internet via 3G then the performance was not good at all. She doesn't live in a rural place so I wondered what other people are experiencing regarding internet connections other than wi-fi

Yup it needs an internet connection for continuous use.
It does cache a little bit, but not enough to wander around.
