Do I need to root before the new 2.2 update comes out? Will I be able to after?

I'm interested in overclocking and wifi tethering.

I should just go ahead and do it right?

I did it back in Novemeber, felt like you did, have gone back to stock a few times, now running BB v.04 and it rocks..the kernel that comes with this rom clocks at 800mhz which is fine.....the thing is you can always go back to stock if you don't like what root offers...but the rom developers keep outdoing themselves and imo once you root you may go back to stock at some point, but you won't stay there

By all means root now! DroidMod has made it easy to actually gain root access to the Droid1 2.1 operating system. Previously you could only install a ROM with root access but with the DroidMod application you gain REAL root with superuser permissions. I too was nervous about rooting because I'm not too tech savvy but with the DroidMod app and support from the Phandroid and Droid Life community it has been quite simple. Once rooted do some research on flashing Roms, creating backups and using different kernels. Rooting was the best thing I've done to my Droid, my only regret it not doing sooner! Better late than never though so GO FOR IT! Once the OTA update rolls out it may very well take away the ability to gain true root as the 2.1 OTA from Verizon did. The developers in the world of Android are top notch and will be able to keep your Droid from becoming obsolete by giving us these great custom ROMS, kernels and basebands not to mention the custom Themes and Apps you have access to once you root. I'm running BB.V04 Froyo build by Pete Alphonso and so far it is flawless! It comes with 800mhz kernel but I did purchase the App SETCPU so I have the ability to set profiles to save battery life and for the ability to overclock if I do want to try different kernels. The official OTA Froyo build is sure to be stripped and watered down by Verizon before it ever reaches your Droid, why not let these great developers take good things and make them GREAT! Just be sure to research and ask questions if you get confused. The rooting is the easy part its all the stuff that you get to play around with after is what can be confusing. THIS IS A LIST OF MUSTS FOR ROOTING THE DROID- You will need to purchase the following Apps ( if possible get the paid versions of these apps, not only do they have much more content and features but you also help support the developers!) #1- ROM MANAGER ( an absolute must!) #2- TITANIUM BACKUP #3- SETCPU. Be sure to make backups so if you have any problems you have them. Going back to stock is easy but I doubt you will! I hope this helped you decide to join the root community and enjoy some Yummy Froyo goodness with the cherry still on top! Good luck and remember to research, every answer you need can be found here at the Phandroid forums or at DroidLife.

I would suggest rooting before the ota. While I don't think that either method of rooting will go away come 2.2 it is possible that with the 2.2 update a locked bootloader is pushed which would put you in the same boat as milestone and dx users

This is exactly what I was thinking.

I'm very familiar with the SPRecovery and RSDLite method (I've watched the videos about 10 times) but I'm unfamiliar with the DroidMod way. I don't find any app in the market for that.

Is there a help guide for that method?

The time to root your phone is the day you get your phone, just after you charge it. But better late than never, right?

There is really no reason to put off rooting, unless you just don't want to root, ever.

It's looking like the official froyo update is the latest leak received, but even if it is newer, root users will more than likely have an 'official stock 2.2' rom to flash the same day.

There is a link to it on the droid-life blog, Root Android 2.1 the Easy Way with New DMUpdater | Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

It's still in beta but they have successfully rooted 2.1/flashed recovery using it. Let me just say if you need a guide for DMUpdater, you shouldn't be rooting in the first place ;)
