Best way to backup/restore to a new phone?

So, for the second time I am having to replace my Droid.

What is the best way to backup my old phone and restore it on the replacement one?

I was told my Verizon that it would duplicate automatically. I was skeptical and for sure I have only seen Google stuff (contacts, gmail, etc) sync.

But I am also interested in all my apps and settings...

I did try an app called MyBackup, which let me copy over all the apps alright, but the market didn't realize they were installed (so it won't know about updates) and of course all my settings and prefs are gone.

Anyone have any luck?

Any apps you downloaded are supposed to show up in the downloads folder in the market, however when this happened to me only about 1/2 showed up. All my paid apps did though. Free one's I just downloaded again.

Hope that helps.
