Help black screen when dialing

I have an xperia x10 which I recently upgraded to 2.1. Ever since then the screen turns black as soon as I hit the dial button - but only when I have the cover on it. It is a cover made for this phone and it didn't do it before I upgraded. Nothing brings the screen back except removing the cover. The phone call is going through because I can hear it just fine. I just can't do anything else. I really want to use the phone with the cover because it gives it more substance, which is something I need. If there is anyone that can help me, I would appreciate it more than I can say.

The problem here is that the cover is impacting the proximity sensor located just above the screen that is designed to turn the screen off when you place the phone to your ear.

Is there something I can do about it or am I just out of luck?

i'd say take small scisors and cut around the sensor to let it free
